
Benson to Rock Cats Bigley Promoted to Triple-A

New Britain, CT- The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, announced that OF Evan Bigley has been promoted to Triple-A Rochester. He will join the Red Wings for the first time in his career in the International League. Bigley is currently leading the Eastern League with 66 RBI. In a corresponding move, the Twins have transferred OF Joe Benson from Ft. Myers to New Britain. Benson, who is returning from a hamate bone surgery, played 21 games for the Twins last September.
Bigley, 25, has been with the Rock Cats since the 2010 season, batting .268 with 23 home runs and 137 RBI in 248 games at New Britain. He was chosen as the Eastern League Player of the Week on June 25, after going 16 for 28 with three home runs, 3 doubles, 8 runs scored and 13 RBI on 6-game road trip, June 19-25. He hit the Rock Cats first home run of season, a grand slam to help beat Richmond, April 6 @ NB Stadium.
Bigley becomes the 13th Rock Cats player promoted to Triple-A this season (OF Darin Mastroianni, RHP Deolis Guerra, LHP Luke French, SS Pedro Florimon, OF Wilkin Ramirez, RHP Lester Oliveros, RHP David Bromberg, RHP Steve Hirschfeld, RHP Bobby Lanigan, LHP Caleb Thielbar, RHP Luis Perdomo, RHP Dan Sattler). Mastrioianni and Oliveros both began the season at New Britain and have reached the Major Leagues with the Twins in 2012.
Benson, 24, is on the Twins 40-man Major League Roster and batted .239 with 2 RBI in 21 games for Minnesota last September. He is ranked by Baseball America as #2 prospect in the entire Twins system. He made his Major League debut, September 6, 2011 against Chicago (AL), starting in CF and batting leadoff and recorded his first MLB hit September 10 @ Detroit.
Benson will be in uniform tonight for the Rock Cats-Fisher Cats double-header at 5:35 PM.
