Mayes, Lipsett lead Aces to series split

Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Less than 24 hours after being blanked 3-0 by Bakersfield, the Alaska Aces answered with a 3-0 whitewash of their own as Chris Lipsett scored a hat trick to provide Lance Mayes with all the offense he would need before 3,214 at Sullivan Arena Wednesday.

The win capped an interesting 24 hours for the team, which watched video for two hours following Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the Condors, then learned of two new players that will be arriving in Anchorage Friday. Forward Bret DeCecco and defenseman Malcolm Hutt were acquired from Peoria in exchange for cash and future considerations early Wednesday. Those future considerations may be announced as soon as tomorrow.

The Aces outplayed Bakersfield for much of the first period, yet were locked in a scoreless tie until Lipsett redirected Jonathan Gauthier's drive from the point over Bakersfield starter Joe Watkins with 3:22 left in the frame. The score remained 1-0 through 40 minutes, even as Alaska held the upper hand in shots, 25-14.

Lipsett opened the third period by capitalizing on a sloppy turnover and whistling a slap shot just inside the post at 3:17 to provide Mayes, who stopped 10 shots in the final period for his second shutout of the season and his first win since December 20. He had been 0-5-1 over his last six decisions since beating Las Vegas 3-1 at Sullivan. Lipsett capped the scoring, and completed his hat trick, when Wes Dorey (who had a hat trick himself with three goals in Saturday's 7-4 loss at Idaho) unselfishly passed up an empty-netter and dished off instead for a tap-in with 42 seconds left.

Alaska (31-23-4) snapped a three-game losing streak and will enjoy a week of rest before returning to home ice for its final three games at Sullivan during the regular season, beginning Wednesday, March 10 in the opener of a three-game set against the Cincinnati Cyclones. All three games (March 12 and 13 as well) will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
