Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers erased a six-run deficit with Danny Mayer's three-run blast in the ninth beat the Jupiter Hammerheads 7-6 at Spectrum Field on Tuesday night. The victory keeps the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate 4.5 games back of first place in the Florida State League North with nine games remaining in the first half.
The Threshers had to play from behind after the Hammerheads grabbed early momentum in the second. After righty Andrew Brown loaded the bases, Jhonny Santos hit a double and Angel Reyes cracked a single to plate two runs each. Brown would allow another double to Michael Donadio to make it 5-0.
Clearwater (31-27) saw the deficit increase further after Jupiter (17-37) added another run in the third to push the score to 6-0. Brown shook off early struggles with a scoreless fourth and gave Clearwater its first opportunity to comeback.
After a wild pitch from Braxton Garrett scored Alec Bohm, Nick Maton's triple to right plated Madison Stokes to cut the lead to 6-2. A batter later, Matt Kroon belted his first Clearwater homerun to left field to shrink the deficit to 6-4.
The Threshers pitching staff found a spark after Brown's scoreless fifth. The 21-year-old battled through five innings and picked up a season-high five strikeouts. Relievers Tyler Carr and Austin Ross (2-0) pitched two scoreless frames each and kept Jupiter off the board into the ninth.
With the Threshers down to their final two outs, slugging outfielder Mayer stepped up to the dish whth two on and drove a hanging Alejandro Mateo (1-7) breaking ball over the left field wall to complete the comeback. The 23-year-old crushed his fifth home run of the year, giving the home team its second walk-off of the season.
The comeback was the largest for the Philadelphia Phillies' affiliate this year, and was just their second win when trailing after eight this season. Clearwater also improves to 6-0 over the Miami Marlins' affiliate on the year.
Clearwater goes for the series victory over Jupiter in game three of the four-game set on Wednesday afternoon at Spectrum Field.
