May Records 10th Save in 4-2 Win over Chinooks

Madison, WI - July 14, 2013. The Madison Mallards (9-4, 30-16) scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings after the Lakeshore Chinooks (8-4, 29-17) tied things up at two in the fifth and the bullpen hung on to give the Mallards a 4-2 win.

Mallards reliever Danny Sullivan (Davenport) worked out of a jam in the seventh, as he walked the first two batters of the inning. He then struck out the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters before inducing a popup to right to get out of the jam.

Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) gave up an infield single to start the eighth but still faced the minimum in the inning. He then allowed a single and hit a batter with a pitch in the ninth but got out of the inning unscathed.

A two-run bomb off the bat off Chinooks designated hitter Jerrick Suite (TCU) tied things at two in the top of the fifth, but the Mallards regained the lead in the next half inning. Mallards left fielder Joe McCarthy (Virginia) knocked in fellow Virginia Cavalier John LaPrise on a sacrifice fly to center.

Mallards catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois) extended the lead in the sixth by hitting a solo shot - his first as a Mallard - to left field on a full count.

Drew Weeks (North Florida) accounted for the other two Mallards runs by knocking home Mike Reuvekamp (California) on a single to right center in the first and later coming around to score on an error by Chinooks shortstop Sawyer Polen (Kent State).

Mallards starter Cam Verbeke (Illinois State) lasted five innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits en route to his fifth win of the season. His record now sits at 5-1. Sullivan ended up pitching two innings and allowed no runs on no hits but walked a pair.

Reuvekamp was the lone Mallard to finish with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Weeks finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Goldstein ended up going 1-for-4.

Suiter's home run was his lone hit of the night but he walked three times. Center fielder Andrew Stevenson (LSU) was the lone Chinooks player with multiple hits and went 2-for-4.

The Mallards have a pair of 7:05 pm games in La Crosse Monday and Tuesday night before returning to the "Duck Pond" Wednesday for a 7:05 pm game against the Green Bay Bullfrogs.

Wednesday is the Oscar Mayer Bacon Appreciation Night.
