July 14, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - July 14, 2013. The Madison Mallards (8-4, 29-16) wrap up a four-game series against the Lakeshore Chinooks (8-3, 29-16) at the 'Duck Pond' today at 5:05 pm.
The Mallards were shut out for the first time of the season in the third game of the series Saturday night away from home. Eric Hanhold (Florida), Dan Sayles (Sacramento City) and Mitchell Sewald (LSU) combined to five-hit the Mallards while Mallards starter Luke Staub (George Washington) allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits to drop to 3-3.
The closest the Mallards would get to scoring was in the fifth and sixth, when they left a runner on third base. Tate Matheny (Missouri State) grounded out to third with Geonte Jackson (San Jacinto CC) on third in the fifth while Mike Fitzgerald (Indiana State) grounded out to short with John LaPrise (Virginia) on third in the sixth.
Reilly Hovis (North Carolina) will get the start tonight for the Mallards. The 6'3" righty is 0-1 with a 5.62 ERA in two starts this season for the Mallards. In the Mallards 6-5 win over the Eau Claire Express on July 5th, Hovis went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on five hits while walking one.
Making the start for the Chinooks will be Colgate, Wisconsin native Tyler Thicke (UW-Milwaukee). Through eight appearances (six starts), the 6'0" lefty is 3-1 with an ERA of just 1.90. He also has 25 strikeouts to just five walks in 33 innings of work. He came out on top in a pitcher's duel in his last start against La Crosse on July 8th by allowing just one run (earned) on four hits over 7.1 innings of work in a 2-1 Chinooks victory.
No Longer On Top
After being shutout for the first time of the season and an 11-3 Waterloo win, the Mallards fell to second place in the Northwoods League in runs scored. Waterloo's mark of 289 runs scored is eight more than the Mallards.
Stellar vs. the Southpaws
Mallards catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois), who is now hitting at a .337 clip this season, is at his best when facing a lefty on the hill. So far this season, he is hitting .455 (10-for-22) with a pair of doubles against southpaws, compared to an average of .297 (19-for-64) against righties.
