Mavs Lose Tight Game to Oilers, 5-4

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - T.J. Caig's power play goal in the final minute of regulation lifted the Tulsa Oilers to a 5-4 win over the Missouri Mavericks in front of 4,587 fans Friday night at Independence Events Center. Missouri, fueled by Jeff Christian's two goals, came back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game in the third period, but couldn't score the go-ahead goal. Five different Oilers scored goals including three on the power play goals Tulsa improved to 9-3-0 while the Mavericks lost their first home game and fell to 4-7-1. The Mavericks will head to Mississippi to take on the RiverKings Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

Christian tallied his first of two goals just 1:27 into the opening frame on an assist from Chad Hinz. It was the Mavericks' first shot of the game and gave them a 1-0 lead for the first time in three games. The CHL's leading scorer Rob Hisey quickly answered for the Oilers on their first of two consecutive power play goals at the 5:53 mark. Forward Michel Beausoleil gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead at the 12:48 mark on assists from Derek Eastman and Aaron Davis. The Mavericks capped the four-goal first period with a fortuitous bounce. Sean Perkins dumped the puck in along the right wing board and it ricocheted off a partition in the glass and into the back of the net as Oilers' netminder Kevin Armstrong was behind the net to play the puck.

The Oilers took a 4-2 lead less than eight minutes into the second period. First, Dallas Steward scored his fourth of the season on assists from Tom Maldonado and Rick Kozak, and then Aaron Davis had his fourth of the season at 7:52.

Missouri battled back on Christian's second goal of the game and 499th of his career, a four-on-three goal, at the 12:51 mark of the second period. Bill Vandermeer and Hinz assisted to cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into the final period.

Jeff MacDermid tied the game at four on the power play midway through the third period for his fourth goal in three games with Missouri. The game remained tied until Caig's goal in the final minute. The Oilers took advantage of a five-on-three power play and Caig scored on a centering pass from Rob Hisey with 43 seconds remaining.
