Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs dropped their third straight road contest and the Wichita Thunder snapped a seven-game winless streak Friday night at the Kansas Coliseum as the Thunder topped the visiting Sundogs, 3-2.
J.F. Perras, in his ninth start of the year, kept the game scoreless in the first period with a leg pad save sliding post to post on Marc Belanger 6:30 into the contest.
After a scoreless first, the Sundogs and Thunder exchanged power play and even strength markers in the second period for a 2-2 tie after 40 minutes of play.
Wichita opened scoring early in the middle frame on the second controversial goal ruling in as many nights for Arizona.
With players from both teams battling for a loose puck at the top of the goal crease, referee Paul Mariconda initially signaled no goal but reversed his call after a conference with his linesmen and the goal judge. Joel Hanson was credited with the power play goal just 18 seconds into the period.
Linus Fagemo continued his strong play of late pulling Arizona even at one at the 7:48 mark with his fourth goal in four games after being held without a goal in his first five contests.
With the Sundogs skating 5-on-4, Fagemo sent a one-time shot past Scott Campbell after a series of saves by the Wichita netminder.
Kyle Hood gave the Sundogs their first lead in more than 150 minutes of hockey on a tic-tac-toe play with linemate Torren Delforte midway through the second.
Intercepting a clearing attempt in the neutral zone, Hood dropped a pass to Delforte through his legs before one-timing the return feed from Delforte past Campbell from between the circles.
Less than two minutes after his club took a 2-1 lead, Nick Biondo, added to the roster earlier in the day after being released earlier in the season, came together with Mike Batovanja near center ice to exchange punches after being pulled to the ice the Thunder forward.
Wichita knotted the game at two late in the period seconds after the Sundogs killed off a lengthy two-man advantage. Hanson recorded his second of the game with 2:31 remaining in the second on an odd-man rush after a broken play at neutral ice.
With time winding down, Jim Jorgensen tallied the eventual game-winner with 3:37 to play in regulation, one-timing a Jason Deleurme feed over the glove of Perras from the top of the near circle.
Perras falls to 4-4-1 on the year with 22 saves on 25 shots while Campbell records his second and his club's third win of the season with 32 saves on 34 shots. Arizona finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage while Wichita converted once on eight power play opportunities.
The Sundogs (4-8-2) close out a three-game road trip tomorrow night against the Amarillo Gorillas. Game time is set for 6:05pm (Arizona time). The game can be heard live on KDDL 'Cattle Country' 94.3FM, the Official Radio Home of Arizona Sundogs Hockey, and online at www.cattlecountryradio.com.
