Kansas City Mavericks News Release
Independence, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks remained atop the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference standings with an impressive 6-3 win over the Tulsa Oilers Friday night at Independence Events Center. Sebastien Thinel extended his league lead in points to 18 with a goal and two assists on the night. The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 5,800 fans and was the second sellout this season, 35th in the Mavericks' three-year history. Andrew Courtney added two goals and extended his point streak to six games and John-Scott Dickson recorded his first multi-goal performance of the season with two goals on the night.
Courtney started the scoring at the 1:56 mark of the first period. Sebastien Thinel recorded his first assist and point of the night on Courtney's goal. The Mavericks doubled their lead six minutes later on a shorthanded goal from David Pszenyczny that was assisted by Lachlan MacIntosh. John-Scott Dickson added the third goal of the period at the 13:48 mark. Dale Mahovsky was credited with an assist on the goal and Thinel earned his second assist of the evening. At the end of the first period, the Mavs led 3-0 and held a 15-11 advantage in shots.
The second period got off to a quick start on Dickson's second goal of the night 38 seconds into the middle frame. Mahovsky was given his second assist of the night on the goal. Exactly a minute later, Ryan Jardine recorded his first goal of the season, burying a loose puck in front of the Tulsa net. Vern Cooper assisted on the goal. The fifth goal was enough to chase goaltender Jon Olthuis from the game. He was replaced by Ian Keserich. Sebastien Thinel continued his impressive night with a goal later on in the period, giving the Mavs a 6-0 lead. Brad Good and Courtney assisted on Thinel's sixth goal of the season.
Tulsa refused to go quietly in the third though, scoring three goals from Jay Sprague, Marty Standish and Mike Ullrich. However it was too little too late for the Oilers and the Mavs took the game by the score of 6-3. Tulsa outshot the Mavs 41-36. The Mavericks went one-for-four on the power play and six-for-six on the penalty kill.
Sebastien Thinel extended his league points league to 18 with his goal and two assists against the Oilers.
The Mavericks hit the ice again tomorrow night against the rival Wichita Thunder. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free.
