HIDALGO, TX - The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees scored two goals less than two minutes apart in the third period to knot the score, then completed the comeback in the shootout for a 4-3 win over the Arizona Sundogs on Friday night at State Farm Arena.
The one-goal decision was Arizona's sixth of the year, tied with Dayton for the most in the Central Hockey League.
David Marshall was credited with the game-winner for his second goal of the game after scoring in the shootout's first round. Dan Gendur and Zak Pearson also scored in the shootout for the Bees, while John Murray turned away all three Sundogs he faced.
After Luke Erickson scored a shorthanded goal for the Sundogs (2-4-3) a minute into the third period, Rio Grande Valley (4-4-0) responded with goals from Jake Hauswirth and Nicolas Rioux less than two minutes apart. Rioux's marker tied the game at 3-3, 7:30 into the frame.
Marshall opened up the game's scoring from the slot early in the first period before Craig Macdonald made it 1-1 on a slap shot from the left circle midway through.
In period two, Arizona jumped out to the lead as Kyle Hood's wrist shot from the right circle trickled between Murray's legs for the period's only goal.
Macdonald extended his goal streak to three games and his point streak to five games despite the loss. He also takes over the team lead in points for the Sundogs with 12 on the year.
Neither team scored a power play goal as the Sundogs were 0-for-5 and the Bees went 0-for-4.
Levente Szuper took the loss stopping 31 shots. Murray made 24 saves in the Bees' win.
Arizona was down two skaters for the game as Adam Smyth and Corey Toy were each serving suspensions. Toy is scheduled to return next game.
The Sundogs and Bees are back it on Saturday night in the final game of Arizona's five-game road trip. Game time is set for 6:30 PM MST.
