Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks beat the Wichita Thunder Friday night, 4-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 5,728 at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks are now 5-0-0 this season against the Thunder and 6-8-1 overall. Goaltender Doug Groenestege stopped 25 of 26 shots for his fourth win of the season, all of which have come against the Thunder. He is now 10-0-0 against the Thunder over the past two seasons. The Mavericks outshot the Thunder 40-26 in the game and have now outscored the Thunder 19-7 overall in the five games.
"The team is really excited to play on home ice," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We have had great support from the community with three sellouts in four games and the guys are loving playing here."
Chad Hinz had a goal and an assist for the Mavericks, and Andrew Davis notched two assists in the team's second straight victory. Missouri looks to make it three in-a-row Saturday night when they take on the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at CenturyTel Center at 7:05 p.m. Tune in to the broadcast on 1030-AM KCWJ, or listen live online via www.MissouriMavericks.com. The Mavericks next home game will be Friday, December 4 against the Wichita Thunder.
Karl Sellan scored his first goal of the season on the power play to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at 10:29 of the first period. Sellan batted the puck out of the air and past Thunder goaltender Scott Campbell, and assists went to Davis and Jeff Christian. The power play goal marked the fifth time in the last six games in which Missouri has tallied at least one power play goal.
Missouri took a 2-0 lead at the 13:39 mark when Brett Hammond controlled the puck behind the Wichita net, and fed Bill Vandermeer in the slot who one-timed the puck in the over the stick side of Campbell. The two-goal lead remained for the rest of the period and the Mavericks also held a 7-6 lead in shots.
Nick Sirota scored his third goal of the season for Missouri, a shorthanded goal, at the 11:39 mark of the second period. Sirota tipped a shot by Davis through the legs of the goaltender for Missouri's second shorthanded goal of the season. Wichita scored their lone goal of the game when Joel Hanson beat Groenestege on a quick shot at the 13:55 mark of the middle frame.
In the third period, Missouri made it a 4-1 score when Hinz scored on a nice individual effort. He skated in along the right wing, got around the defender, and snuck a backhand under the pads of Campbell.
The Mavericks finished 2-8 on the power play and killed all five of Wichita's chances.
