Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks' three-goal third period propelled them to a 6-2 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings Friday night at Independence Events Center. Defenseman Bret Tyler had a pair of goals including an empty netter and forward Nick Sirota had a goal and two assists as Missouri improved their record to 16-16-3. Newcomer Jordan Foreman had a goal, assist and a fight in his first game with the team. The Mavericks ended a two-game winless streak at home and moved into a tie for fifth place in the Northern Conference with the Tulsa Oiler with 35 points. Missouri will host the RiverKings again Saturday night at Independence Events Center at 7:05 p.m.
Sirota put Missouri on the board first when he took a pass from Tommy Lange and beat RiverKings' goaltender Kevin Beech low to the stick side. The goal marked Sirota's 12th of the season tying him for second in the league in goals among rookies. The Mavericks made it 2-0 at the 18:35 mark of first period when Simon Watson tallied his sixth goal of the season on a pass Braden Walls. Missouri took the two-goal lead into the first intermission despite being outshot by the RiverKings 15-9.
Former Maverick Nathan Schwartzbauer cut the lead in half when he scored his third goal of the season at the 11:30 mark of the second period. Missouri regained the two-goal lead at 16:59 when Tom Maldonado came streaking down the right wing and centered a pass to Tyler who buried his second goal of the season.
Missouri held on to the 3-1 lead until the 5:04 mark of the third when Anders Strome corralled a rebound and put it into the back of the net. Lange had a chance 5:30 into the third to make it 4-2 when he streaked in on a breakaway, was hauled down to the ice and earned a penalty shot. He was unable to convert on the shot that beat Beech but sailed just wide of the net, however Missouri kept the momentum and scored three more goals in the final eight minutes of the period.
Jeff Christian tallied his 18th goal of the game at the 11:58 mark when he buried a rebound into a wide open net. The goal extended his season-high scoring streak to 11 games in which the veteran has 15 points (9-6=15). Foreman, who assisted on Christian's goal, scored his first goal in his first game with Missouri just 1:36 after the Christian goal and completed his Gordie Howe hat-trick (goal, assist and fight).
RiverKings' coach Kevin Kaminski pulled the goalie with 2:40 remaining and Tyler answered with his second of the game at the 18:06 mark of the period. Every fan in attendance earned a burger from Backyard Burgers on the Mavericks' sixth goal. Missouri's 6-2 victory marked the second time this season the fans won a burger.
The Mavericks finished 0-4 on the power play, but killed all eight RiverKings' chances. Mississippi outshot the Mavericks 33-26 and has outshot Missouri in all five games between the teams this season.
The Mavericks and RiverKings will battle again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Independence Events Center. Superfan, Cameron Hughes, will make his return and will be in the crowd tossing out t-shirts and cheering on the Mavericks.
