INDEPENDENCE, MO --- The Missouri Mavericks won the first of four straight Central Hockey League games against the Mississippi RiverKings on Friday, January 15, claiming a 6-2 victory in the teams' first-ever meeting on Maverick home ice.

With the win, Missouri moved within three points of the RiverKings in the Northern Conference standings with a 16-16-3 record.

The RiverKings fell to 17-14-4 with the loss, but remain in fourth place in the conference standings.

Missouri took advantage of turnovers in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Tommy Lange fed Nick Sirota at the 2:03 mark of the period, who converted the play for his 11th goal of the season from the slot.

The Mavericks took advantage of another turnover in the Mississippi zone later in the period, when Braden Walls found Simon Watson open in front of the net, and Watson converted the play for his sixth goal of the season at 18:35 for a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Mississippi got back in the game in the second period, when Nathan Schwartzbauer's shot from the right side got through everybody for his third goal of the season with eight and a half minutes left in the period. The goal also came against the team Schwartzbauer played for at the start of the year, before being released and later acquired by the RiverKings. Stephen Margeson and Bobby Chaumont received assists on Schwartzbauer's goal.

But, Missouri came back with each team a man short and scored with just over three minutes left in the period for a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. Bret Tyler found the back of the net, assisted by Tom Maldonado at 16:59.

In the final period, Anders Strome's hard work in the crease area resulted in him scoring his sixth goal of the season and first in a Mississippi uniform five minutes into the period.

Strome's goal was assisted by Chaumont, his second helper of the night.

But, Missouri responded with three straight goals to finish up the night, with markers scored by Jeff Christian, Jordan Foreman, and Tyler's second goal of the contest, which was an empty-net goal with 44 seconds remaining for the final 6-2 score.

Neither team scored on the power play. Mississippi outshot the Mavericks by a 32-26 margin.

Goaltender Tim Boron (1-4-0) suffered the loss in his first RiverKings' start, despite making 20 saves. Alexandre Vincent was the winning goalie for Missouri with a 30-save performance.

Next action for the RiverKings will be tomorrow night, January 16, when they again face the Missouri Mavericks in the Independence Events Center, starting at 7:05 PM.
