Kansas City Mavericks News Release
TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa Oilers defeated the Missouri Mavericks for the first time in regulation this season with a 4-3 win Friday night at BOK Center in Tulsa. Oilers' goaltender Trevor Cann stopped 35 of 38 shots in the win and Marty Standish's shorthanded goal in the third period was the game winner for the Oilers. The Mavericks are now 5-1-1 against the Oilers this season and the teams will square off again Saturday night at Independence Events Center.
"That was the best game we have played in two weeks," said Mavericks Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We did everything we could tonight except win. We are headed back in the right direction and look forward to tomorrow's contest."
Ray DiLauro's blast from the top of the point gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at the 12:32 mark of the first period. Ryan Jardine and Toby Lafrance earned assists on the play, but the Mavericks held the lead for just under three minutes. Jack Combs scored the first power play goal against the Mavericks in seven games at the 15:25 mark on assists from Tom Dignard and Chad Costello. Missouri had killed 30 straight power plays prior to the goal by Combs. The teams remained tied through the first period and Tulsa held the edge in shots at 11-9.
Missouri again took the lead early in the second period on Mike Berry's 13th tally of the season. Nathan O'Nabigon earned his eighth assist on the play to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Anthony Battaglia tied the game at 8:50 when he took a drop pass from Mike Wirll and beat Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa. Missouri dominated the shot chart in the second period at 12-4, but the teams remained tied after two periods.
Special teams goals determined the outcome of the game as the Oilers scored their second power play goal and a shorthanded goal in the third period. Mike Wirll gave the home team a 3-2 lead at 6:22 on the power play and Marty Standish scored a shorthanded goal at 12:51 for a two-goal lead. The Mavericks and Bill Vandermeer answered quickly after the Standish goal scoring just 28 seconds later, but that proved to be the final goal of the game. Tulsa held strong for the final seven minutes of regulation to preserve the 4-3 victory.
Missouri fell to 3-6-1 in the month of January after the team had not surrendered more than four losses in any month of the season. The Mavericks outshot the Oilers 29-11 in the final two periods however it was the Oilers that won on the scoreboard with three goals compared to two for the Mavs.
