Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (17-22-3) won their second game in a row defeating the Texas Brahmas (19-14-4) by a 5-3 score on Friday night. The Bees opened a 3-0 lead and despite a furious Brahmas rally were able to hold on at all times to secure the victory. It is the Bees first winning streak since December when they rattled off five straight.
The Bees scored two first period goals as Zak McClellan and Aaron Lee were both able find twine. Zak McClellan scored at 16:23 of the first period after trying to center a pass from behind the net that Brahmas netminder Kevin Beech struggled to play and eventually the puck trickled to the back of the net. Tyler Lehrke and Darcy Campbell picked up the two assists.
Just a little over one minute Aaron Lee increased the Bees lead to two goals with his 11th strike of the season. After a loose puck found its way to the center of the ice Lee fought his way to the puck and let loose a shot that beat Beech glove side. After the goal Brahmas coach Dan Wildfong pulled Kevin Beech in favor of Wayne Savage.
In the second period the Bees would give themselves a 3-0 as Brett Wilson scored a power-play goal at 13:37. Wilson used a defenseman as a shield a ripped a shot that beat Savage in the five-hole.
After two periods of play the Bees lead the Brahmas by a 3-0 score and were outshooting Texas 24-23.
The Texas Brahmas would make things interesting in the third period scoring three goals but were never able to take the lead. With the Bees only lead by one at 3-2 Tomas Klempa took a brilliant feed from Aaron Lewicki to beat Wayne Savage making it a 4-2 game.
The Brahmas would get another goal in the third to trail by one but Tyler Lehrke scored an empty net goal with less than a minute remaining to ice the game for the Bees.
The Killer Bees and Brahmas will play game two of the weekend set tomorrow night at the State Farm Arena. Tickets are available by calling 843-PUCK (7825) or visiting killerbeehockey.com.
