Third period heroics not enough

Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - The league's ‘third period team' was unable to get the job done as the Brahmas dropped a 5-3 contest to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Friday in Hidalgo. All three of Texas' goals were scored in the final period.

Zak McClellan's shot from behind the net took a rebound off Brahmas' Kevin Beech and to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. A second goal was given up in the first period, ending Beech's night early, when Rio Grande winger Aaron Lee notched his 11th goal of the season.

With Greg Hogeboom in the box in the second period, the Texas' sixth ranked penalty kill gave up the special teams goal by Brett Wilson who went five hole on rookie goaltender Wayne Savage.

Texas enforcer Mike Sgroi began the comeback for the black and purple when he beat netminder Juliano Pagliero nine minutes into the final frame. Captain Jason Deitsch made it a one shot game a minute later when he took a pass from linemates Chad Woollard and Greg Hogeboom for his 13th of the season.

Following the goal by Deitsch, the Bees bench called a timeout in order calm Texas' offensive surge; and it was just the thing needed proven by a Tomas Klempa goal to put Rio up 4-2. With six minutes remaining in the game, Brahmas' newcomer Brian Ihnacak netted his first goal of the season in his first game. Sgroi and Mick Lawrence were credited with the assists to put Texas back by a shot. With time winding down the Brahmas went with the extra attacker only to leave the net empty for a Tyler Lehrke and concluding the game with a 5-3 loss.

It will be a night of revenge tomorrow night as the Brahmas take on the same Killer Bees Saturday evening in Hidalgo for a 7:30 pm faceoff. Texas returns to the NYTEX Sports Centre Sunday afternoon for Faith and Family Night. The 4:00 pm game against the Fort Wayne Komets will feature MLB slugger Vernon Wells in pregame events.
