Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Mississippi RiverKings Friday night, 5-2, in a battle at Independence Events Center in which the teams combined for 300 penalty minutes. This was the second time in a week the two teams faced off and it was apparent the six days the teams spent apart from each other were not enough. There were 30 fighting majors and 14 game misconducts which all occurred in the third period. Missouri will host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Saturday night at Independence Events Center at 7:05 p.m. The game will be televised live on Metro Sports.

Louis Dumont gave the RiverKings the lead at the 5:08 mark of the first period on an even strength goal. The Mavericks answered on Olivier Filion's second goal of the season when he took a pass from Toby Lafrance and had got behind the defense. Filion made a nice move on RiverKings' goaltender Kyle McNulty to tie the game at one at the 15:46 mark. Mississippi regained the lead with just 11 seconds remaining in the first period on Russell Smith's first goal of the season, a power play goal, giving the ‘Kings a 2-1 lead heading into intermission.

The RiverKings scored the lone goal in the second period to take a 3-1 lead when Matt Summers snuck the puck through the padding of Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa at the 11:33 mark. Through two periods, the RiverKings held a 20-15 edge in shots and had five power play chances compared to the Mavericks' two chances.

Mississippi was awarded a penalty shot early in the third period and Nathan Lutz took advantage of his chance beating Festa and giving the RiverKings a 4-1 lead. The Mavericks soon cut the lead in half just 24 seconds after Lutz's goal when Mike Berry found the back of the net. Toby Lafrance tallied his second assist of the game on Berry's goal. Olivier Filion also recorded his second point of the game with an assist on the goal.

Most of the third period went on without incident after Berry's goal, but at the 13:51 mark of the period, the fracas began. Jared Lavender took a charging penalty and Tyler Sheldrake retaliated by dropping the gloves with Lavender. Dominic D'Amour and Matt Summers squared off as the Sheldrake and Lavender donnybrook was simultaneously happening. D'Amour and Sheldrake both received game misconducts. The melee subsided for the next four and a half minutes until Nathan Lutz and Toby Lafrance went toe-to-toe, after Lutz was charged with a holding penalty. Shortly after, Louis Dumont scored an empty net goal which gave the RiverKings the final tally of the game, giving them the 5-2 lead.

After the Dumont empty netter, 12 total fighting majors were given out, along with 10 game misconducts. In total, 300 penalty minutes were handed out.

The Mavericks host their second of a pair of games this weekend at Independence Events Center when they take on the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale now starting at just $14 per game.
