Three Things You Have to Know for Friday, October 29, 2010

#1 - Championship Re-Match

The last time the Rapid City Rush and the Allen Americans were on the same ice surface together it was a celebration for the Rush who defeated the Americans in double overtime of Game Six in the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Finals. Scott Wray scored that cup winning goal and he returns to the Rush for the 2010-11 season and is off to a three-point in four games start scoring two goals with an assist. The Rush power play has been nearly unstoppable in the early going converting seven of their 20 chances, ranks first in the CHL at 35%. The Americans power play has clicked despite their on-ice success in the wins and losses. Thus far, Allen is three for 30 ranking last in the league at 10%. The Americans are off to a perfect start on the road winning all three games, while Rapid City lost their only home game.

#2 - Strong Early Starts

A pair of teams who have started strong this season after both struggling a bit in 2009-10 meet on Saturday night when the Dayton Gems (3-1-0) visit the Bloomington PrairieThunder (3-0-0). The Gems were just 25-46-5 last season and started the season 1-2-1 after four games. The PrairieThunder finished last season 31-34-11 and were 1-2-0 after three games. The head-to-head match-up last season was tilted towards Bloomington who won nine of the 11 contests including the last five in a row. Bloomington forward Craig Macdonald scored 25 points (10-15=25) with a +12 plus/minus rating in the games versus Dayton. The PrairieThunder head into play on Friday night versus Evansville as the lone unbeaten team in the CHL.

#3 - Remarkably Consistent Riley

Colorado forward Riley Nelson has been unbelievably consistent over his eight seasons with the Eagles and this year is no different as he is off to a great start with 11 points (5-6=11) in five games including goals in each contest. Each of his games thus far, four of which were wins for the Eagles, have seen the All-CHL performer score multiple points and his career accolades have him climbing the league's all-time list ranking 10th on the CHL's goal scored list with 256 scores, two fewer than Mississippi's Chris Richards who is sitting on 258 and has two goals this season.

Other Headlines

Arm Wrestling Match Among Champions- Two of the last three CHL Champions, the 2009 Champion Texas Brahmas (1-2-1) and the 2008 Champion Arizona Sundogs (2-2-0), meet in a two-game set at Tim's Toyota Center. Both Texas and Arizona have trailed three times when heading into the third period. The Sundogs will retire Chris Bartolone's #29 jersey prior to Friday's game.

Thank You Mr. Carroll- In last night's 2-1 goaltender's dual in Bossier-Shreveport, it was only fitting that the Mudbugs celebrated the career of goaltender Ken Carroll who played for the 'Bugs for nine seasons and ranks number one all-time in the CHL with 31 shutouts and is tied for second with 187 wins. The game also marked the 10th anniversary of the Mudbugs debut in the CenturyTel Center. Shawn Limpright scored a regulation goal and the shootout game winner for the first place Mudbugs.

Welcome Back- In what should be an emotional return, Mississippi forward Jeff Christian will lead the RiverKings (1-3-0) into the Independence Events Center on Friday night to face the Missouri Mavericks (2-1-1) in his first trip back to the building he called home last season. Christian led the Mavs in their expansion season scoring 78 points (29-49=78) and he currently has three points (1-2=3) in four games this season with the 'Kings.

Round Two in Odessa- The Jacks (1-4-0) and Laredo Bucks (2-1-1) meet for the second consecutive game in the Jack Shack on Saturday night. The Bucks won round one on Thursday night, the Jacks home opener, thanks to a four point night (2-2=4) for Neil Trimm. Laredo won 6-1 scoring four second period goals.

Tulsa TripTik- The Oilers (2-2-1) have a busy Halloween weekend that will see them travel 1,469 miles playing three-games-three nights. The journey starts in Colorado (4-1-0) on Friday night, the second time this week those two clubs have squared off - the Eagles came away with a 4-1 win on Tuesday night in Tulsa, and then continue to Wichita (0-4-0) for a contest Saturday night. The conclusion comes on Halloween with the lone CHL match-up on 'freight night' when game two of the Tulsa/Wichita home-and-home series winds up.

One-Timers

-Tulsa goaltender Trevor Cann was re-called by the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL) on Thursday

-With his team's win in Allen on Tuesday, Bossier-Shreveport Head Coach Scott Muscutt became just the second CHL coach to reach the 400 win plateau (Doug Sauter - 544 wins) - Muscutt got win #401 last night in a 2-1 shootout win over RGV

-Dayton's goaltender Jeff Jakaitis is averaging 33 saves per game and ranks tops in the league with 132 total saves

-Fort Wayne (1-1-1) and Quad City (1-3-0) meet for the first time this season on Friday night, the Komets were 12-1-2 versus the Mallards last season
