DAYTON, Ohio - The Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Dayton Gems Sunday evening, 6-2, at Hara Arena in Dayton. Forward Kyle Bochek had a pair of goals and Brett Lutes had a three-point effort on a goal and two assists for the Gems. Mike Berry and Todd Griffith scored the goals for Missouri who fell to 31-19-6 on the season. Missouri is still just four points out of first place in the Turner Conference, and the Mavericks will take on the first-place Colorado Eagles on Tuesday night at Independence Events Center.

"The boys had no juice tonight," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "They worked hard, but we are going to put this one behind us and look forward to Colorado on Tuesday night."

Dayton peppered Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa with 44 shots in the game while the Mavericks had 30 total shots. Dayton earned 10 power play chances compared to just three for the Mavericks and the Gems converted on three power plays. Both teams' also added shorthanded goals.

Lutes opened the scoring at the 13:05 mark of the first period to put the Gems up 1-0, but the Mavericks immediately answered. Berry scored just 13 seconds later on assists from Griffith and Steven Later, but it would be the closest Missouri would get for the remainder of the game.

The Gems scored twice in the second period and three times in the third to run away with the game. Bochek converted on the power play in the second period, and Tim Hartung added an even strength, unassisted goal to give the Gems a two-goal lead.

A total of four goals were scored in the third period, and all of them came on special teams. Jonathan Ornelas scored a shorthanded goal at the 4:45 mark, and Bochek added his second power play goal of the game at the 8:16 mark. Mavericks' forward Todd Griffith made it 5-2 when he took a nice feed from Simon Watson and beat Gems' goaltender Derek MacIntyre. It was a shorthanded goal, but it marked all the offense the Mavericks could muster. Finally, Brandon Naurato scored on the power play with 1:35 remaining in the game to give the Gems a 6-2 victory.

The Gems won the season series against the Mavericks two games to one, and Dayton improved to 28-24-4.

The Mavericks return home on Tuesday evening as they take on the Colorado Eagles in the final meeting of the season between the two teams.
