Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Jamie Milam's hat trick and a shutout from John DeCaro highlighted the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs' 6-0 victory over the Texas Brahmas Sunday afternoon at the CenturyTel Center. With their 30th win of the season, the Mudbugs stand at 30-24-3 and move back within four standings points of the Brahmas as they prepare to host the Dayton Gems on Tuesday.
Milam scored one goal in the second period and added two more in the third to become the first Mudbugs defenseman to record a hat trick since Ryan Fairbarn in 2007. At the other end, DeCaro made a number of key saves to earn his second shutout of the year and tie Mike Gorman for fourth in CHL history with 17 in his career. Travis Clayton scored a goal and had two assists in the game, while Shawn Limpright finished with one and one.
The opening period ended scoreless with the Mudbugs outshooting Texas 10-5, but both goaltenders had to make great saves to keep it that way. John DeCaro stopped Alex Curran on a shorthanded breakaway early in the first, but Scott Reid countered with a huge stop on Andy Contois alone in front later in the period.
The 'Bugs took the lead early in the second when Milam faked a slapshot on the rush before sneaking a wrister past Reid's blocker at 1:38. They added to the lead less than three minutes later as Clayton won a draw in the Texas zone and fought his way to the front before Limpright picked up a rebound and fired it into the net to give Bossier-Shreveport the 2-0 edge after two.
Milam's second goal came on a powerplay blast just over a minute into the second as the 'Bugs went up 3-0. Clayton then backhanded in a rebound chance after Limpright drove to the front of the net for the fourth goal. Only 1:21 later, Milam one-timed a Simon Mangos pass through Reid's five-hole to complete the hat trick and take over the league lead among defensemen with his 16th goal of the year.
Later in the third after Texas forward Mike Sgroi took his fourth minor penalty of the game, he and James DeLory finally squared off in a fight that had been brewing all night. The two traded blows in a good bout, but DeLory edged out Sgroi for the win. Right after the scrap Andy Contois tapped in a back-door feed from David Rutherford to cap off the win with his first goal as a Mudbug.
John DeCaro (17-11-1) finished with 23 saves in the shutout to outduel Scott Reid (1-1-0), who played well with 25 saves for the Brahmas. Bossier-Shreveport outshot Texas 31-23 and scored two powerplay goals on six chances. The Brahmas went 0 for 3 on the powerplay.
The Mudbugs continue a six-game homestand Tuesday night at 6:35 pm against the Dayton Gems at the CenturyTel Center. Fat Tuesday is also the perfect opportunity for Mardi Gras Night with the Mudbugs, which will feature a parade on the ice during intermission!
