"It was the furthest thing from what the score indicated tonight," said Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We controlled the puck for a majority of the game, had a lot of quality scoring chances but were unable to find the back of the net. The good thing is we can go right back at it again tomorrow night."
Colorado opened the scoring at the 6:09 mark of the opening period when Kevin Ulanski scored an even strength goal on assists from Riley Nelson and Brett Thurston. Missouri outshot the Eagles 10-8 in the period, but Colorado held the edge on the scoreboard after one frame.
The Mavericks tied the game on a tipped in goal by Ted Vandermeer at the 4:03 mark of the second period for his first of the season. Chad Hinz ripped a slap shot from the top of the left circle and Vandermeer tipped it past Eagles' goaltender Mike Mole to make it a 1-1 game. The Eagles answered on a pair of special teams goals to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Nelson scored a shorthanded goals and Ryan McLeod added a power play goal to give the home team the two-goal lead after two periods.
Colorado quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third period when Ryan Tobler and Nelson tallied goals just 1:24 apart. Mavericks newly acquired forward Nick Sirota scored at the 11:21 mark of the third period on a nifty forehand to backhand move on an assist from Derek Pallardy. Finally, at the 15:55 mark, Adam Hogg finalized the score at 6-2 when he shoveled in a rebound.
