Amarillo, TX 10/23/09 - The Amarillo winning streak was stopped Friday night as the Gorillas fell to the Odessa Jackalopes 9-4.
The first half of the opening period belonged to the visiting Odessa Jackalopes. Not even 5 minutes into the contest, Forward Jeff Pierce would strike first, while forward Paul Kelly would tack on another at the 10:49 mark to give the Jackalopes the early lead. Coach Pellerin's power-play crew would come to the team's rescue under 2 minutes later, as forward Jake Morissette nabbed a rebound shot from Gordon Bell to cut the Odessa lead in half. After one period of action, Odessa 2 Amarillo 1.
The Jackalopes took advantage of their special teams play in the second, scoring three times with the man advantage (2 power-play & 1 extra attacker). Forward Jeff Pierce would shine the brightest, as he collected his first hat-trick (3 goals) of the season during the second frame. Gorillas forward Stuart McRae would add the lone Amarillo goal of the period (his third of the season) at the 6:35 mark. Four goals total for the Jackalopes in period. End of the second period, Odessa 6 Amarillo 2.
The third period didn't go the Gorillas way either, as the club surrendered three Odessa goals. Jason Chafe and Jake Morissette would score Amarillo's goals in the period, but it wasn't enough as Odessa took the victory 8-4.
Goaltender Mike Brown was pulled in the second period, yielding 4 goals on 21 Jackalopes shots.Amarillo power-play went 1 for 7 while Odessa went 4 for 7.Dan McNeill was involved in two fights...Jake Morissette earned the second star of the game with two goals and an assist.
The Gorillas will take the ice again tomorrow night, Saturday, October 24th, as Amarillo hosts the expansion Missouri Mavericks at 7pm. In celebration of "Lady's Night", the Gorillas are offering HALF-OFF tickets to all ladies who come support their hockey team.
