Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks scored a club ECHL record ten goals and romped to a 10-3 win over the league-leading Tulsa Oilers on Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The win improved Missouri's record to 2-0-0 at home and 3-5-1 overall. The franchise record for goals overall is 11 from a December 21, 2010 win over Evansville while the Mavericks were in the Central Hockey League.
Last night in Tulsa, Sam Povorozniouk, Dane Fox and Shawn Pauly skated together on a line for the first time, and the trio accounted for the Mavericks' lone goal. Just 24 hours later they were back at it and staked the Mavericks to a 1-0 lead before the game was 90 seconds old. Povorozniouk took a seam pass from Fox and split the defense, used a deke to the backhand to create an opening and beat Tulsa goalie Brody Hoffman for his fourth goal of the season. The goal came 1:18 into the game and was the Mavericks' fastest first goal this season. Tulsa answered back with a marker from Axel Blomqvist at 2:51, but the Mavericks were quick to reply on the power play. Fox scorched a slapshot from the slot past Hoffman at 8:12 to restore Missouri's one-goal lead. Luke Juha capped the first period scoring with his first pro goal at 15:07 and sent the Mavs into the intermission with a two-goal lead.
Missouri broke through for two quick goals in the second period to put even more distance between itself and the league-leading Oilers. Reed Seckel scored his first goal of the season just :59 into by tipping in Tyler Elbrecht's point shot. Lucas Lofquist became the fifth different Maverick to score in the game when he poked a loose puck on the doorstep underneath Hoffman and across the goal line. That marker came at 5:08, and with the primary assist Fox earned his third point of the night. Former Maverick Garrett Ladd chipped into the Missouri lead at 14:26 by jamming a loose puck past Josh Robinson. Missouri had successfully killed off a Tulsa power play moments before Ladd's goal, but couldn't clear the zone. The Mavericks restored their three-goal lead just over a minute after Ladd's goal when Lofquist one-timed a Rocco Carzo pass for his second of the night, but the Oilers countered 26 seconds later with Christophe Lalancette picking up the goal. Lofquist capped his hat trick with 24 seconds left in the period and gave Missouri a four-goal lead headed to the third.
The Mavericks refused to take their collective foot off of the gas and quickly pumped home a pair of goals in the first 2:05 of the third. Kyle Schempp netted his first as a pro just :22 in and Andrew Courtney followed with his second of the campaign to close out the early barrage. Seckel fired home his second of the night at 9:38 with help from Povorozniouk and Ryan Obuchowski, who earned his first professional point. Courtney and Seckel each cashed in on the power play to give the Mavericks multiple power play goals in two of their last three games.
Josh Robinson picked up his second win of the season with a 23-save effort. The Mavericks ended the night 3-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
