Game Recap: K-Wings Blanked by Nailers in Wheeling

November 6, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Kalamazoo Wings were shutout for the first time on the season as they dropped a 3-0 contest to goaltender J.P. Anderson and the Wheeling Nailers on Sunday at WesBanco Arena.

The first period started with back-and-forth action, while each team generated a series of quality chances. Both Kalamazoo and Wheeling had power play opportunities during the first twenty minutes, but it was the goaltenders who commanded the attention. Kalamazoo goalie Nick Riopel turned away six tries from the opposition, as Anderson made ten saves of his own, sending the game to intermission in a scoreless tie.

The second period featured more of the same, until Kalamazoo were forced to kill off a four-minute double minor after a high sticking infraction. With the extended power play opportunity, the Nailers took advantage with a tic-tac-toe passing play that freed up Nick Sorkin on the back door for an easy tap in.

After a two-shot second period, the Wings asserted themselves offensively during the third. Anderson answered each one of Kalamazoo's chances during the barrage, and with Riopel on the bench in favor of an extra attacker in the closing minutes, Wheeling put the game to bed. Andrew Ammon tallied an empty netter with 1:29 remaining, and Sorkin added one of his own with under a minute remaining in the game, sealing a 3-0 victory for the Nailers.
