WICHITA, KS - The Missouri Mavericks took their tenth victory of the season over long-time rival, the Wichita Thunder, on Tuesday night at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita, KS. The win boosts the league-leading Mavs up another 2 points in the standings, and improves their overall record to 29-3-1-1.
Net-minder Stephon Williams stopped 32 of 33 shots on goal, claiming his first win in a Mavs sweater since being reassigned to Missouri on Jan. 8 from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers- the Mavericks' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.
Missouri jumped out front of the Thunder with a 2-goal lead before former Mavs' defenseman, Landon Oslanski, notched Wichita's lone goal of the game in the second frame. Josh Holmstrom boosted the visiting Mavericks up another 2 points with back-to-back goals before the end of regulation to secure a 4-1 road win for Missouri.
Sebastien Sylvestre opened the scoreboard for the Mavericks at 12:08 of the first period with the help of Tyler Barnes and Jesse Root.

Then 6:40 into the second frame, Root notched a goal of his own, picking up a mishandled puck by Wichita goaltender, David Shantz, behind the Thunder goal, and maneuvered a quick 2-0 lead for the Mavericks. Root's 15th goal of the season, edges him ahead of teammate Tyler Barnes as the current leading goal-scorer for Missouri.
Oslanski got the Thunder on the board with a blast from the point at 16:34 of the second period while the home team was in a man-advantage situation.
Holmstrom's 2 goals came at opposite ends of the final frame. His first was scored on a Missouri power-play just 1:52 into the period. Bryce Aneloski was credited with the lone assist on the play. Then Holmstrom struck the final blow of the game at 17:45 after Wichita pulled net-minder Shantz from the crease. Rookies Chris Owens and Tanner Fritz took the helpers on the empty-net tally.
Missouri's series record against Wichita improves to 10-0-0-0 with their tenth victory of a total 15 games to be played against the Thunder this season. The Mavericks claimed the Independence Cup Rivalry Series title earlier this season after earning enough points to make it impossible for the Thunder to recover a lead over the Mavs in the annual contest.
The Mavericks play their next 2 games on the road against the Colorado Eagles on Friday and Saturday evening before returning home to Silverstein Eye Centers Arena to celebrate Mac's (mascot) Birthday on Friday, Jan. 22nd! Join in on the fun and enjoy the company of special mascot guests and a youth hockey/mascot broom ball game during the first intermission of the game.
Tickets to all Missouri Mavericks home games are available online at TicketMaster.com and in-person at the arena box office. The Mavs game on Friday, Jan. 22nd sparks a 14-game home stand at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena that will carry through to Feb. 21st!
