BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - The Missouri Mavericks shutout the Bloomington Blaze Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum by a score of 3-0. Goaltender Charlie Effinger stopped all 36 shots by the Blaze for his second shutout of the season and Andrew Courtney registered two assists on the night. The win was the Mavericks' sixth victory in their last seven games and Missouri now sits with an 18-13-3 record in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference. The Mavs return home to Independence Events Center Sunday night for a showdown with the Turner Conference-leading Fort Wayne Komets. Faceoff for Sunday's game is 6:15 p.m.
"A great team effort and a good road win," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Our penalty kill was much better tonight, Charlie Effinger was strong in net and we will come home and try to keep things going. "
The Mavs took the lead seven minutes into the game on Patrick Schafer's first goal with the Mavericks. Brad Good and Brandon Smith assisted on Schafer's tally. The Blaze outshot Missouri in the period, 15-9.
The second period went without much incident until Dale Mahovsky got tied up after the whistle with Aaron Dawson at the 14:29 mark of the period. Mahovsky amassed 17 penalty minutes due to the incident, with a five minute fighting major, two minute fight instigator minor and a 10-minute misconduct penalty. The Mavs doubled their lead to 2-0 on a goal from John-Scott Dickson with three seconds remaining in the second period. Andrew Courtney assisted on the last second score.
Sebastien Thinel scored his 10th goal of the season six minutes into the third period, giving the Mavericks a 3-0 lead early on in the final period of regulation. Courtney was credited with his second assist of the night on the goal. Thinel's goal was all the Mavs needed, as they skated to a 3-0 victory.
The Mavs wrap up their three games in three nights stretch Sunday night against the conference leading Fort Wayne Komets. Faceoff is at 6:15pm for Sunday's game at Independence Events Center.
