January 14, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
Moline, ILL - The Dayton Gems would be forced to watch the Quad City Mallards score five unanswered goals in the third period on their way to a 9-1 defeat inside the iWireless Center in downtown Moline, Illinois on Saturday night. Scoring for the Gems was Nick Fanto.
Coming into the rematch with intensity, the Gems would match up evenly with the Mallards to kick off the second game in as many nights in the Quad Cities. Dayton would find themselves in trouble as the period inched closer to the midway point, as a Mallards rebound goal lit the lamp to give the home team the 1-0 lead at the 7:29 mark. Dayton battles back in the second half of the frame to tie the game off the stick of Nick Fanto, who also sniped in a rebound goal through traffic past a screened Mallards netminder David Brown with less than three minutes to go. Fanto's goal, his 13 th of the season, was assisted by Kyle Bochek at 17:56 and ended the period deadlocked 1-1 with the Mallards. Shots on goal favored Quad City 11-8 through twenty minutes.
Firing out of the gates in the second, Quad City again captured the lead with a shorthanded goal just 2:52 into the period, making it 2-1 until Quad City would capitalize on a Gems errant linechange to set up CHL leading scorer Brandon Marino with a long stretch pass through neutral ice for a breakaway goal at 8:10 to make it a 3-1 Mallards game. Firmly controlling the tempo throughout the middle stanza, Quad City again lit the lamp at the 12:59 mark to skate into the second intermission ahead 4-1 after forty minutes of play. Dayton outshot the Mallards 12-11 in the second period.
The Gems would be forced to witness a five goal barrage past goaltender Bryan Hogan at the hands of the Mallards in the third period, while being unable to generate any additional lamplighters past Brown through the final horn to give Quad City a 9-1 win. The Mallards would earn their 21 st win of the season while outshooting the Gems 36-31 after sixty minutes of play.
The Gems return home to Cassano's Italian Ice inside the historic Hara Arena on Sunday afternoon when they host the Evansville IceMen at 4pm. The first 1,000 fans through the gates beginning at 3pm will receive a limited edition Brett Lutes poster. Fans are invited to another free postgame skate on Cassano's Italian Ice immediately following the game, with the entire Gems team on hand to sign autographs.
Tickets for Sunday's game are still available by calling the Gems ticket office at 275-7777 or by visiting www.DaytonGems.com.
