PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - Craig Macdonald and Mike Gurtler each scored a pair of goals, but Kevin Petovelo buried the game-winner with 1:37 left to play as the Arizona Sundogs came back in the third period to top the Laredo Bucks by a 5-3 final on Saturday at Tim's Toyota Center.
Petovello's goal gave the Sundogs (12-17-6) their first and only lead of the hockey game. The Bucks (13-20-0) took a 3-2 lead early in the third period courtesy of Matt Boyd's rebound goal, but after that Arizona responded with three unanswered tallies from Gurtler, Petovello, and an empty-netter by Macdonald in the final second.
After trailing 2-0 entering the second period, Arizona battled back to tie game as Macdonald scored a shorthanded goal after forcing a turnover in the left circle at 4:32. Gurtler then tied the game from the right side of the goal crease off JP Chabot's centering pass with 1:03 left to play. The goal was Gurtler's first since being acquired by the Sundogs from Missouri on December 31st.
In the opening period Laredo's Erik Boisvert scored from the top of the crease six minutes in and Rusty Masters buried a rebound on the power play with 1:19 left in the frame.
Chabot finished with three assists on the night for Arizona. Kyle Hood assisted on Petovello's game-winner. Gurtler tipped Tyler Butler's shot from the blueline to tie the game in the third.
For the second straight night the Sundogs topped the 50-shot mark with 56 in the game. Scott Reid picked up the win with 26 saves. Torrie Jung suffered the loss despite 51-saves.
Both teams finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
The Sundogs enter the final week of their season-long, 10-game home stand on Wednesday when they host the Berry Conference leading Wichita Thunder at 7:05 PM MST.
