Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. - Jeremy Boyer- who scored twice and picked up two assists- and Jason Kostadine- who provided one goal and three assists- both enjoyed four point nights as the host Quad City Mallards routed the Dayton Gems 9-1 Saturday night. The Mallards scored the last eight goals of the game on the way to their most lopsided win of the season, their biggest single-game offensive outburst of the campaign and a victory that propelled second place Quad City to within two points of the first place Fort Wayne Komets in the Turner Conference standings.

"The [Mallards] started feeding off each other and again the crowd was awesome...and we fed off of them," said Mallards Coach and General Manager David Bell. "Momentum is one powerful tool and if you start rolling it's tough to stop. No matter who I put out there, they seemed to get results."

4,521 fans watched the Mallards complete a two-game home sweep of the Gems after a crowd of 5,874 attended the Mallards' 6-3 defeat of Dayton Friday night at the i wireless Center. A total of 10,395 spectators saw the Mallards in action over the last two evenings, marking the first time a Quad City hockey team has drawn better than 10,000 fans over back-to-back nights since more than 10,000 came out on October 6 and 7, 2007 to watch the American Hockey League's Quad City Flames over their inaugural opening weekend.

The Mallards run of eight unanswered goals started when, with Quad City shorthanded, Mickey Lang tipped the puck in to snap a 1-1 tie at 7:29 of the second period. Brandon Marino's breakaway goal stretched the Mallard lead to 3-1 at 8:10 of the second. Sean Flanagan steered home Jeremy Boyer's centering feed to make it 4-1 at the 12:59 mark.

The Mallards turned the game into a complete route by scoring five times in the third period. Eric Giosa produced the fifth Mallard goal of the evening when his shot was deflected past Dayton goaltender Bryan Hogan at 4:09 of the third. At 9:16, Lang- who also had an assist- scored his second of the contest from close range on the power play. Just 34 seconds later Obi Abuba buried the Mallards' seventh from the doorstep.

Kostandine converted a Quad City two man-advantage by beating Hogan on the short side at 13:54 of the third and Boyer capped off the Mallard explosion by firing the in goal number nine from the slot with two minutes and twenty seconds remaining.

Boyer, in fact, provided bookend goals for Quad City- he jammed in the first of the game from point blank range at 7:29 of the first period. The Gems responded when Nick Fanto crashed the net to tie the game at one at 17:56 of the first, but would have nothing to cheer about the rest of the way as 11 different Mallards collected at least one point and six Mallards rang up two or more points apiece.

The Mallards travel to Bloomington to meet the Blaze tomorrow before returning home next Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. to take on the Evansville IceMen. Fans can purchase $2 soft drinks and $2 beers at i wireless Center concession stands during all Tuesday night home games this season.
