Kansas City Mavericks News Release
HIDALGO, Texas - The Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Friday night, 6-2, at Dodge Arena. Killer Bees' goaltender Andy Franck stopped 34 of 36 shots for his second win of the season and the Bees improved to 4-3-0 including three straight victories. Missouri was looking for the team's third straight win, but couldn't overcome four first-period goals and fell to 2-6-0 on the season.
The Mavericks have just one more game on the road - in Rio Grande Valley tomorrow night - before heading home for the team's first game at Independence Events Center on Friday, November 13.
"Tonight was a terrible performance," said Mavericks Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We will be much better tomorrow. We must clean up our defensive zone and not allow multiple odd-man rushes."
At the 5:01 mark of the first period, Justin Kanigan opened the scoring and the Bees never looked back. At the 10:05 mark of the period, the Bees held a 4-0 lead. Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored on the power play and Daymen Rycroft and Sean Muncy added even strength goals to build a four-goal cushion. Rio Grande Valley had four goals on their first eight shots. Missouri quickly answered on Carlyle Lewis' second goal of the season at the 10:38 mark to make it a 4-1 game heading into the first intermission.
Andrew Schembri added to the Bees' lead in the second period on his first of two goals. It was the only goal of the middle frame and the Bees' held a 5-1 lead after two periods.
Mavericks forward Derek Pallardy scored his first goal of the season at the 15:20 mark of the third period, but Missouri didn't have enough time left. Schembri added his second of the game with 1:42 remaining in the final period. It marked the Bees second power play goal, and proved to be the final goal and a 6-2 victory for Rio Grande Valley.
Missouri's 36 shots were most in any game this season, but the team was unable to score on the power play for the third straight game. Missouri has just one power play goal in the last six games (1-for-29). The Mavericks hadn't allowed a power play goal in the previous two games, but gave up two goals on eight chances Friday night.
The Mavericks and Killer Bees will meet again Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. CST at Dodge Arena. It is the final road game of the Mavericks' opening nine-game road trip.
Mavericks' single-game tickets are now on sale at the box office at Independence Events Center. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday game days. Tickets start at just $12 and are still available for opening weekend. Visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
