Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia youngster Ronny Mauricio continues to impress at the plate in 2019. The 18-year-old registered a pair of hits in a 5-0 loss to Augusta on Wednesday night. The multi-hit performance was his 25th of the year, and boosted his season hit total to 101. That mark puts Mauricio just 10 hits shy of the franchise's single-season hit record (111) set by J.C. Rodriguez in 2016.
Unfortunately for Columbia (15-18, 39-60), Mauricio accounted for two-thirds of the team's base hits on the evening. Augusta (18-15, 54-47) pitchers allowed just five baserunners during the affair. Seth Corry (W, 7-2), Matt Seelinger and Ryan Walker combined for 15 strikeouts against Fireflies hitters. The trio of arms handed Columbia its ninth shutout loss of the season.
The Fireflies had some notable performers on the mound as well. Jared Biddy, Justin Lasko and Conner O'Neil tossed 5.1 scoreless innings of relief. For Biddy and Lasko, the outings represented their first as members of Columbia's roster. Neither Biddy nor Lasko have allowed an earned run in their brief tenures as Mets farmhands. The duo have combined for 20.1 scoreless innings across three levels in 2019.
The Fireflies conclude their series against Augusta on Thursday. RHP Jose Butto (4-8, 3.70) is expected to start for Columbia in the rubber match. He'll square off against RHP Trenton Toplikar (1-1, 3.72) with a chance to secure a series victory. First pitch is set for 7:05 ET. Coverage begins at 6:45 ET at FirefliesLiveStream.com.
Thursday also represents another Budweiser Thirsty Thursday at Segra Park. $1 Bud Lights will be available on the Centerfield Concourse. You can also purchase 1/2 priced draft beer and fountain drinks. Additionally, the contest will serve as First Responders Night at the ballpark. Tickets are available at FirefliesTickets.com.
