Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
LEXINGTON, KY - The Kannapolis Intimidators (16-16, 44-56) began the first game of their six-game road trip against the Lexington Legends (14-17, 51-49) Tuesday night and fought back and forth all night, but ultimately fell 5-4 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Reed Rohlman drew a walk to get the scoring started for Lexington and take a 1-0 lead.
Kannapolis quickly answered in the top of the second thanks to a solo home run (9) for Corey Zangari to tie things at 1-1, with his day was just getting started.
An inning later, Chris Hudgins singled in the bottom of the third to give the Legends the lead back, 2-1.
Once again, Corer Zangari replied in the top of the fifth with a solo home run (10) to almost the exact same spot to tie the game at 2-2.
After five innings, Taylor Varnell's day came to an end on the mound for the Intimidators. He pitched five innings, gave up six hits, just two earned, and struck out three batters. Devon Perez came in for Varnell heading into the sixth.
Kannapolis managed to take their first lead of the game after a Camilo Quinteiro single, scoring Alex Destino, making things 3-2.
The lead didn't last very long for the Intimidators. Nathan Eaton singled for the Legends and drove a run in to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. The Intimidators made the call to the bullpen after that to bring in Lane Ramsey (L, 3-5). Before Ramsey got out of the inning, a wild pitch from him allowed Lexington to score another run and take a 4-3 lead.
Down but not out, Quinteiro once again drove in a run in the top of the ninth, this time Andrew Vaughn, to tie that score at 4-4.
Just as they had went back and forth all game, Lexington got the last laugh in the bottom of the ninth. Rudy Martin grounded into a fielder's choice, but Rubendy Jaquez still managed to score to grab the 5-4 win.
The Intimidators will continue their series with the Legends on Wednesday night. Jason Bilous (2-6, 3.65 ERA) will be on the mound for Kannapolis against CJ Eldred (0-2, 6.28 ERA) for Lexington.
