Seattle Reign FC News Release
SEATTLE (July 2, 2015) - Seattle Reign FC (5-2-2, 17 pts) will head on the road as it tries to extend its league unbeaten streak to seven games on Friday, July 3 at 4 p.m. PT against the Western New York Flash (4-4-1, 13 pts) at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester N.Y.
Reign FC is coming off a 2-1 victory over FC Kansas City last Saturday at Memorial Stadium, with a pair of goals in the second half - one each from forward Beverly Yanez and midfielder Kim Little - giving Seattle the edge.
With the victory, Reign FC extended its home league unbeaten streak to 18 games, dating back to the start of the 2014 season, and now sits in second place in the NWSL, one point behind the Chicago Red Stars.
Western New York defeated the Boston Breakers 2-0 last Sunday, with goals from forward Lynn Williams and midfielder Elizabeth Eddy in the victory. The Flash are currently tied for fourth in the league with 13 points.
With the U.S. Women's National Team continuing its run in the FIFA Women's World Cup, both Reign FC and the Flash will be shorthanded for Saturday's matchup with a combined four players competing for the U.S.
For Seattle, goalkeeper Hope Solo and forward Megan Rapinoe will be absent, while Western New York will be without the pairing of forward Sydney Leroux and defender Whitney Engen.
Cameroonian forward Ajara Nchout Njoya and newly signed Nigerian midfielder Halimatu Ayinde also competed in World Cup matches, but will likely be out on Friday.
Through nine games, both Reign FC and Western New York have several players with their names on the NWSL leaderboards. For Seattle, Yanez sits tied for third in goals scored with five while teammate Jessica Fishlock's four goals puts her tied for fourth. Little is currently second in the league in assists with four.
On the Flash's end, Williams and midfielder Becky Edwards are tied for third in the NWSL in assists with three apiece, while midfielder Samantha Mewis is in the top 10 in shots with 21.
Edwards and Mewis have also been stalwarts in the Flash lineup, starting all nine games alongside defenders Jasmyne Spencer, Jaelene Hinkle, and Brittany Taylor, and midfielder Abby Dahlkemper.
Saturday's game is the second of three matchups this season between Reign FC and the Western New York Flash. In the first contest, Seattle's season opener on April 12 at Memorial Stadium, Reign FC came away with a 5-1 victory as Rapinoe notched a hat trick in the effort. The two sides will meet again in Seattle on July 11 in a match that will also serve as a homecoming for Solo and Rapinoe from their National Team duties.
