Sky Blue FC News Release
Morristown, N.J. (Thursday, July 2, 2015) - Sky Blue FC announced today that it has placed Lo'eau LaBonta and Meg Morris on waivers to make room on its roster for Australian National Team players Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr, who recently completed their participation in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.
"This is a transition time for clubs with World Cup players returning to rosters," said Jim Gabarra, Sky Blue FC Technical Director & Head Coach. "Unfortunately, we have to make some tough decisions to make room on the roster for those players. I would like to acknowledge Lo'eau and Meg for their contributions to our team over the first half of the season. They did a nice job of helping us put a good product on the field, and I want to thank them for what they did for our club."
Morris made four starts and nine appearances for Sky Blue FC this season, registering an assist and seven shots over 453 minutes played. LaBonta, who was a 2015 NWSL College Draft Selection by the New Jersey club this past January, appeared in six games and recorded two shots over 80 minutes of action.
Foord and Kerr are now set to return to the Sky Blue FC roster, and both players look to make an immediate impact.
Entering her third year with Sky Blue FC, Foord has been a defensive anchor ever since she first arrived in the Garden State. Over two seasons, she has started 35 times over 36 appearances, contributing three assists on the offensive end. After her rookie campaign in 2013, she also received NWSL Second XI accolades. Foord was the youngest Australian to ever play in a World Cup match when she was suited up for the Matildas at the age of 16 during the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. At its conclusion, she was also selected as the Best Young Player of the tournament. Despite being just 20-years-old, Foord has now participated in two FIFA Women's World Cups for Australia.
Foord most recently played for Perth Glory of the Australian W-League, where she and Kerr helped the team to an appearance in the league championship.
The rights to Kerr, 21, were acquired by Sky Blue FC in November when the team completed a trade with the Western New York Flash. The Australian playmaker had a big season for the Flash in 2014, leading the club with nine goals while finishing third on the team with four assists. She made 20 appearances for Western New York last year, starting every match. During her first NWSL campaign in 2013, Kerr started 19 games over 21 appearances, registering six goals and five assists to help lead the Flash to the NWSL Shield. The Flash eventually fell to Portland Thorns FC in the 2013 NWSL Championship match.
Internationally, Kerr made her debut for the Australian Women's National Team in 2009, just five months after her 15th birthday. Two years later, she made two starts in three appearances for the Matildas in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and now has a pair of World Cups on her resume after playing with Australia this past month in Canada.
Sky Blue FC is currently on the road for a Friday night pairing with Portland Thorns FC before returning to Yurcak Field on Saturday, July 11th, to host Portland. Individual game tickets for Sky Blue FC home matches are on sale now. Make sure you catch all of the world class NWSL action this season at Yurcak Field by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849)!
