July 5, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 1, 2011) - The Winston-Salem Dash announced today that OF Jose Martinez has been promoted to AA Birmingham. In a corresponding roster move, OF John Spatola will join the Dash from low-A Kannapolis.
Martinez has been near or at the top of the Carolina League in hitting throughout the 2011 season. Upon his departure, he was second in the league with a .314 batting average, but first among active Carolina League hitters. Salem's Reynaldo Rodriguez ranked higher, but he was promoted on June 11. Martinez has played in all but two games this season, and leads the league in hits (99). He is also third in the league in games played (79), first in at-bats (315), fourth in runs scored (45), and fifth in total bases (133).
Baseball America ranked him as having the Best Outfield Arm in the White Sox organization. He's responded with ten outfield assists with the Dash. This year, Martinez played on opening day for the first time since 2008. He missed most of that year, all of 2009, and the first half of 2010 with a torn ACL that required microfracture surgery on his right knee.
Spatola was hitting .256 with four home runs and 19 RBI in 42 games. He played most of the season in right field. He's managed a multi-hit game in each of his last two appearances with the Intimidators. He was drafted in the 35th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Boston College. Last year Spatola split time between Rookie Bristol and low-A Kannapolis, hitting a combined .251 with eight home runs and 27 RBI. He registered a 13-game hitting streak with Bristol from June 23 until July 5 (.340, 18-53). Before getting drafted, Spatola knocked 17 home runs for BC, the third-highest single-season total in school history.
The Winston-Salem roster remains at the Carolina League limit of 25 players.
The Winston-Salem Dash are the Class-A Advanced minor league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. To purchase tickets and for more information, please call 336-714-2287 or visit www.wsdash.com .
