Loux, Garcia Help Pelicans Salvage Finale

July 5, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA - Right-hander Barret Loux moved into a four-way tie atop the Carolina League wins leaderboard with five strong innings, newly minted circuit Topps Player of the Month Leury Garcia ripped three hits to spark his club's offense, and the Pelicans slipped by the Lynchburg Hillcats 6-4 in the finale of four to a sweep in the first set of a ten-game road swing Tuesday night at Lynchburg City Stadium.

Riding their first five-game losing streak of 2011, the Pelicans took the lead for good in the top half of the third inning when the first pitch of the inning from Lynchburg's Blaine Sims found the left knee of Pelicans second baseman Santiago Chirino and kicked the Birds' offense into gear. A team that had batted just .225 in the first three games of this series finally found a groove, bringing three across against Sims with Garcia, Ryan Strausborger, and Mitch Hilligoss all batting in runs in the frame.

Loux mastered the art of working out of jams Tuesday night, stranding a pair of runners aboard in four of his five innings. In the first, it was runners at first and second with three straight strikeouts after two singles opened the inning. In the third, it was runners at second and third. In the final two frames of the righty's night, Loux marooned Hillcats at the corners. The only blemishes on his night were a one-out solo home run by Shawn McGill in the second that gave Lynchburg a short-lived 1-0 lead and an RBI single by Joey Terdoslavich in the fifth to cut into Myrtle Beach's lead. Loux (8-3) scattered nine total hits over his five innings, striking out five and walking just one. Lynchburg left eight men on the bases against him and 12 on the night, going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Leading 4-3 after Terdoslavich's RBI and another Hillcats run against reliever Trevor Hurley in the sixth, the Pelicans responded with two runs against Sims in the seventh. Getting some help from an error and a wild pitch, Myrtle Beach reinstated its three-run lead at 6-3 as David Paisano and Jared Hoying each touched home plate. Sims (2-2) was charged with all six Pelicans runs, five earned, on ten hits over six and one-third innings. As has become commonplace of late, shortstop Garcia was a terror from the top spot of the order, singling twice, doubling once, scoring a run, and driving in another.

Out of the Myrtle Beach bullpen, Hurley allowed his unearned run in the sixth and pitched two innings of one-hit ball. Joe Ortiz followed with a perfect inning that included a strikeout and Johan Yan, though he made it interesting, picked up his ninth save by closing out the Hillcats in the ninth. Lynchburg loaded the bases and got a run home on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch for Gerry Rodriguez, but Yan whiffed former Pelican Shawn McGill with the tying run in scoring position to end the affair.

The Pelicans hit the road to Winston-Salem for the second series of this ten-game road trip Wednesday through Friday at BB&T Ballpark. Following this ten-game road trip, the Pelicans return home for the first of four with the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Coastal Field from July 13-16. Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
