Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- RHP Barret Loux (7-3, 3.18) at LHP Blaine Sims (2-2, 2.76) -

LEAPIN' LEURY: Pelicans shortstop Leury Garcia has been named the Carolina League's Topps Player of the Month for June. Myrtle Beach's middle infielder and leadoff man batted .342 for the month, the second-highest average in the circuit, with 38 hits, the third-highest total in all of Class A baseball. Garcia's offensive resurgence has been sparked by a return to the top spot in the batting order where he has hit regularly now since June 8. The fleet-footed switch-hitter from Santiago, Dominican Republic entered play on June 1 with a .229 batting average, a .266 on-base percentage, and a .552 OPS. Garcia exited June as a .273 hitter with a .318 OBP and .671 OPS. The 20-year-old got back to using his legs to make things happen in June, as well. Garcia bested his walks total from April and May (seven combined) by walking ten times in June, and he also matched his stolen bases total from the season's first two months by swiping ten bags in June. Leury led the CL inruns (22), hits, total bases (51), and stolen bases in the month.

SLUMPIN' STRAUS: Pelicans All-Star outfielder Ryan Strausborger may be hitting his first slump of the 2011 campaign as the season nears its dog days. Following his 0-for-4 performance on the Fourth of July, Strausborger has now gone hitless in three straight games to drop his batting average from .294 to .284. It marks the first time this season that the Indiana State University product has gone without a hit in three straight contests.

LOSING STREAK: The Carolina League Southern Division's first-half champions are in their extended losing streak of the year. With three losses in their first three games here in Lynchburg, the Pelicans have now dropped five straight for the first time this season. Prior to this slide, the Pelicans had only endured three losing streaks of three games or more this season with their longest coming in the form of a four-game skid from May 20 to 24.
