Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 5, 2011) - In a series filled with slugfests, the finale came down to a pitcher's duel that went the Red Sox way, as Salem was able to pick up two runs on two errors in the first inning and rode that to a 3-2 win on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem had opportunities to tie the score throughout the game, but went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and dropped three of four games to Salem.
Salem (6-7, 37-45) used some sloppy Winston fielding to their advantage in the first inning. Shannon Wilkerson reached to lead off the game on a two-base throwing error by Tyler Saladino. After Zach Gentile grounded out to advance Wilkerson to third, Jorge Padron reached second base on an error by Ian Gac that scored Wilkerson. With two outs, Dan Butler singled home Padron to put the Red Sox up 2-0.
The Dash (6-6, 38-44) halved the lead in the bottom of the first when Jared Mitchell hit a one-out triple and scored on a ground out by Andy Wilkins.
In the fourth, Winston showed off the leather. With one out, David Mailman hit a high drive to right field that Nick Ciolli caught just before flipping over the short fence in right. Ciolli was able to hold on to the ball, robbing Mailman of a home run and keeping the Salem advantage to two. But the Sox followed the second out with three straight base-hits by Derrik Gibson, Joantoni Garcia, and Wilkerson. The hit by Wilkerson was a double that scored Gibson to put Salem up 3-1.
Though Winston had the tying run on base in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Red Sox lead held at two into the sixth when Salem thought they had gotten another insurance run. Mailman singled to start the inning, and with two outs came around to cross home when Mitchell committed a fielding error after a single by Wilkerson. Before reliever Brandon Kloess delivered the next pitch, he appealed to third base, and home plate umpire Thomas Newsom ruled that Mailman didn't touch the base. He was called out, and the run was taken off the board. The call prompted an argument by Salem manager Bruce Crabbe, and he was ejected.
The play resulted in a two-run swing when the Dash scored in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Ciolli singled with one out and stole second after Kyle Colligan struck out. Luis Sierra stepped in and pulled a double to right field to score Ciolli and bring the Dash within one. The hit by Sierra was Winston's only hit with runners in scoring position of the night.
Winston put the tying run on base in the seventh and eighth innings. Daniel Wagner led off the seventh with a double but was stranded at second, and Colligan singled and stole second in the eighth but did not score.
Jake Petricka (0-2) got the start for the Dash and gave up three runs but only one was earned. Even so, he got the loss in four innings and struck out four. Kloess threw a season-high four innings of relief and didn't allow a run and struck out two. Chris Hernandez (7-5) picked up the win for Salem after five innings. He gave up one run and struck out five in five innings. Jeremiah Bayer hurled a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season.
Note:
The game was interrupted before the start of the ninth when the power to the lights temporarily went out... The power delay lasted 20 minutes before the ninth inning could resume.
Winston-Salem opens up a three-game series with Southern Division rival Myrtle Beach on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. LHP Joe Serafin (1-6, 5.50) starts for the Dash opposite LHP Robbie Ross (8-2, 2.49)
