Burned on the Fourth of July: After a long rain delay, the Dash and Red Sox were able to play some holiday baseball last night. Unfortunately for Winston-Salem, Salem scored eight times before the end of the fourth inning and held on to win 9-7. The Red Sox scored twice in the first inning, one run in the second, four times in the third, and added one more run in the fourth inning. Brad Furnish was battered and bruised (literally, after liner smacked directly off his forearm in the second inning) for five runs in two-plus innings to suffer the defeat. The Dash made it a game with another late-inning rally, but Kendal Volz set down the side in order in the ninth to finish of Salem's second straight win. The loss dropped Winston-Salem to 1.5 games behind Kinston for first place in the Southern Division.
Taking offense: This offensively charged series between the Dash and Red Sox comes to an end tonight, with Winston-Salem looking for the four-game split. The first three games have seen 49 runners cross home plate and 76 total base hits.
Good to the Last Drop: Jose Martinez went 2 for 5 with a run scored last night in what proved to be the right fielder's swan song in a Winston-Salem uniform. Nicknamed Café, Martinez joined the Dash just more than one year ago after missing nearly two full seasons with a knee injury. In 140 games with Winston-Salem, he hit .283 (156 for 551) with ten home runs, 21 doubles, four triples, and 73 runs. Prior to his promotion this season, Café hit .314 to lead all active Carolina Leagues, led the circuit with 99 hits and 315 at bats. He was third in games (79) and fourth in runs scored (45). Martinez was hitting the ball very well in the month leading to his deserved promotion. After a six-game stretch when he went 1 for 23 that spanned the end of May and beginning of June, Martinez hit in 22 of his last 25 games. He hit .349 (37 for 106) during this period with 12 RBI.
MitchBlade: Last night Jared Mitchell was sharp offensively last night, reaching base all five times he went to the plate. Mitchell was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a solo home run, three RBI, three runs scored, and two walks. After passing through a 1 for 21 stretch offensively, the former first rounder is 6 for 12 in this series with three doubles, a homer, three RBI, six runs scored, two walks, and he was hit by a pitch.
Stuff your sorries in a Gac, mister: After striking out in his first two at bats last night, Ian Gac erupted for hits in his next three. He went 3 for 5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in the loss. In his last four games, he is 9 for 18 at the plate with a home run, three doubles, four RBI, and six runs. Gac leads the Carolina League in homers by six over teammate Andy Wilkins and is also first in RBI with 56. He is first in games played (81), third in at bats (307), tied for second in doubles (24), fourth in slugging (.544), first in extra-base hits (44), first in runs scored (57), first in total bases (167), and first in HR/AB ratio (1/15.35). The Dash lead the Carolina League in home runs with 78, 21 more than second place Salem and Frederick.
Caesar Salad: Saturday night Tyler Saladino hit the first home run into the new outfield bar at BB&T Ballpark, a solo shot in the fifth inning that gave the Dash a 4-2 lead. It was the third straight game with a home run for Saladino, who now has ten dingers on the season, tying him for sixth in the Carolina League. If he had the requisite number of plate appearances, he would rank second in the league to Ian Gac in best HR/AB ratio (1/17.2). After missing the first month of the season with a broken hand, the former Oral Roberts standout has taken off offensively. He has a base hit in 18 of his last 22 games and a multi-hit game in nine of those games. Since June 5, Saladino is batting .337 (28 for 83) with nine doubles, a triple, six homers, 13 RBI, and 15 runs scored. He has raised his batting average 74 points to .256 during this period.
Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Chris Hernandez (6-5, 3.10) makes 15th start of the season and first against the Dash. He has lost four of his last five decisions, but most recently picked up a win on June 30 at Wilmington. He threw 5.2 innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on nine hits in the win. Hernandez had a 2.20 ERA at the end of May and was 5-2 in his first nine starts with Salem, earning an All-Star nod for the Carolina League. In his five starts since his ERA has jumped almost a full point up to 3.10. Hernandez was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Red Sox and made one appearance for Rookie Lowell. For the Spinners, he threw two innings and gave up one run on three hits. He previously pitched at the University of Miami for three years and compiled a 28-8 record in his time with the Hurricanes. Hernandez was the 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year after garnering a Miami freshman-best 11 wins. That season he was also named First Team All-ACC, an accomplishment that he matched in 2010 before getting drafted. In his last season with Miami he went 10-3 with a 2.64 ERA. His repertoire includes a four-seam fastball that sits 88-89 mph and a cutter that he can throw 83-85. He also throws a changeup and curveball.
