Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 4, 2011) - There was no shortage of offense for either team on Independence Day at BB&T Ballpark, but Winston-Salem fell, 9-7, despite Jared Mitchell's three-hit night. The teams combined for 16 runs and 25 hits in a series that has amounted to 49 runs over three games.

Salem jumped on Winston and starter Brad Furnish. Shannon Wilkerson and Kolbrin Vitek hit consecutive singles to start the game. Wilkerson then scored on a groundout by Jorge Padron, and Vitek scored on a two-out single by Miles Head.

Winston-Salem responded in the bottom of the first with two straight doubles by Tyler Saladino and Jared Mitchell to pull within one.

In the second, Salem scored again when Derrik Gibson singled and came around to score on a groundout and throwing error by Ian Gac.

The offense continued in the third inning when the Red Sox broke it open against the Dash bullpen. Furnish started the inning and gave up a triple to Padron, who scored on a wild pitch, and walked Bryce Brentz. Leroy Hunt then relieved Furnish and Dan Butler reached on a single. Hunt retired one batter then walked Alex Valdez, loading the bases. Gibson then struck out before Wilfred Pichardo drove in two more runs with a single. Valdez later came around to score on a wild pitch, putting the Red Sox up 7-1.

Salem plated one more in the fourth when Vitek led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brentz.

The Dash began to come back in the fifth when again Saladino and Mitchell led off with successive doubles to score one run. Jose Martinez then reached on a dropped pop-up by Head, and Gac drove in Mitchell. Mike Blanke later drove in Martinez with a sacrifice fly, leaving the lead at 8-4 for Salem.

Winston scored again in the sixth when Saladino and Mitchell walked to lead off the inning. Martinez then singled, but Brentz threw out Saladino at home. Gac followed with a single to score Mitchell.

The Red Sox got one final insurance run in the seventh after Brentz hit a leadoff triple and scored on a double by Head.

Against reliever Kendall Volz, Jared Mitchell led off the eighth with his eighth home run of the season. With the homer, Mitchell put the capper on a perfect night at the plate that saw him net three extra-base hits, three RBI, three runs scored, and two walks. Gac then hit a double with one out and scored on a Blanke single to bring the Dash within two, but Winston couldn't complete the come back.

Anatanaer Batista (4-2) earned the win in relief of starter Pete Ruiz. Batista threw 2.2 innings and gave up one run (earned) on five hits. Furnish was hit with the loss in two innings. He allowed five runs, four earned, and walked two batters. Volz picked up his first save of the season.

Winston-Salem and Salem conclude their four-game set on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark at 7 p.m. RHP Jake Petricka (0-0, 5.40) makes his first home start, and second overall for Winston-Salem against LHP Chris Hernandez (6-5, 3.10).
