Martin Lifts Goldeyes to Series Win over T-Bones
KANSAS CITY, KS - The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Kansas City T-Bones 5-4 in the rubbermatch of their three-game set in Kansas City Sunday afternoon.
Kyle Martin drove in all five runs for the Goldeyes, including a pair of home runs as the Goldeyes relied on an abundance of relief pitching to solidify their 33rd win of the season.
Winnipeg (33-27) would strike first in the contest when Kyle Martin drove home Wes Darvill after Darvill and James Harris reached on back-to-back walks to begin the game.
In the bottom of the first, the Goldeyes got their first look at starting pitcher Grant Borne, who was signed earlier in the day by the club. Borne, who pitched in the Washington Nationals organization with the Potomac Nationals earlier this season, was seeing his first action since May 22nd, and was roughed up early. With runners on the corners, a wild pitch brought home the tying run before back-to-back singles from Casey Gillaspie and Tyler Marincov drove in another two runs to give the T-Bones a 3-1 lead.
That would spell the end of the day for Borne, which wasn't a total surprise as coming into the game Goldeyes manager Rick Forney alluded that he may relieve Borne fairly early and Sunday afternoon's matchup could be a bullpen day for the Goldeyes.
That's exactly how it played out with five different pitchers taking the mound on the day.
Brandon Bingel came in to relieve Borne and would end the threat with the Goldeyes trailing 3-1 after the first inning.
The T-Bones would add to their lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Nava which made it 4-1.
Winnipeg got back in the game when Kyle Martin smashed a two-run shot with his seventh home run of the season and all of a sudden the Goldeyes were back within one.
Things stayed that way until Martin came back to the plate in the top of the fifth. With Wes Darvill on third, Martin ripped another two-run shot over the fence - his second home run of the game and third multi-homerun game of his career- to give the Goldeyes a lead they'd never relinquish, putting them up 5-4.
Martin's five RBI's are a career-high for the 26-year-old first baseman from Greenville, South Carolina.
Winnipeg's relief pitching would do the rest, shutting out the T-Bones the rest of the way.
Bingel was replaced by newcomer Justin Kamplain in the bottom of the fourth, and the left-hander was solid in his debut, walking three while striking out two in 2.0 scoreless innings. Kamplain, who spent last season in two levels of the New York Yankees organization, was signed by Winnipeg on Saturday.
From there Parker French pitched three strong innings in long relief, giving up just one hit and setting the stage for Victor Capellan to collect his league-leading 19th save of the season in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
The league will now break for the 2019 American Association All-Star Game taking place at CHS Field in St. Paul on Tuesday night. Mitch Lambson, Victor Capellan and Wes Darvill will represent the Goldeyes.
The Goldeyes return home on Wednesday, July 24th when they host the Texas AirHogs at Shaw Park. Advance tickets are on sale now by visiting www.goldeyes.com/tickets or by visiting the box office at Shaw Park.
