Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Today, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A/Atlanta Braves) announced Derek Martin, former Director of Ticket Sales for the Altoona Curve (AA/Pittsburgh Pirates), as the Assistant General Manager / Ticket Sales of the club. Martin will join the Pelicans front office staff in preparation for the 2008 season, the team's 10th anniversary, featuring the Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game on June 24, 2008 at BB&T Coastal Field.
"I am extremely excited about getting down to Myrtle Beach and I'm anxious to help the staff as we get ready for next season," said Martin. "I look forward to getting to know the staff as we work towards setting new attendance records for the franchise. That is definitely my goal."
Martin, 28, spent the last five years with the Curve and proved to be a key component to a franchise that was honored as the recipient of the prestigious John H. Johnson Award in 2006, presented annually to the top franchise in all of Minor League Baseball. Martin oversaw the Curve's ticketing and group sales efforts throughout the Central Pennsylvania region during his time with the club. Prior to the 2007 season, he served as a ticket account manager for the Curve.
"D-mar moving to Myrtle Beach is another example of our commitment to the Pelicans," said President & Managing Partner of the Pelicans Chuck Greenberg. "He is a very special person, with boundless enthusiasm and a remarkable, positive approach which endears him to everyone with whom he comes into contact. His addition to the leadership team is an enormous step in our effort to build the Pelicans into one of the great franchises in Minor League Baseball."
Added Altoona Curve General Manager & Pelicans G.E.R.T. Todd "Parney" Parnell: "D-mar is the textbook example of how we want to bring young people into the industry we love, have them grow and learn the way we do things and stay with us throughout their careers. We are very proud of D-mar and know with his energy, dedication and off-the-chart people skills, he will do great things with North and the staff in Myrtle Beach."
Martin graduated from Slippery Rock University in May of 2002 with a degree in Sports Management along with a minor in business. Affectionately known as "D-mar," he was the President of the Sport Management Alliance at Slippery Rock, which is ranked in the top three in the country. While in college, he competed in the 400-meter hurdles and 4 x 400 relay on the Slippery Rock track team, making him by far the most physically fit member of the current Pelicans front office staff.
"Our entire staff is excited to welcome D-mar to Myrtle Beach," said Pelicans General Manager North Johnson. "His experience and knowledge gained in Altoona will definitely be an asset to our organization. Bringing him here from Altoona shows the commitment that the ownership group has for all three teams (Altoona, State College, and Myrtle Beach) as we know that this move will make us a much better organization."
Tonight, the Pelicans play host to the Frederick Keys in game three of a four-game series at BB&T Coastal Field. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening to the fans at 5:30 p.m. It's the final Thirsty Thursday of the year presented by Budweiser, The Weekly Surge, Club Boca, and Hot 100 FM with dollar beer specials flowing from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The remainder of the homestand will be highlighted by NASCAR night on Saturday, September 1st at 7:05 p.m. and the final post-game fireworks show of the season will be on Sunday, September 2nd as part of Fan Appreciation Night at 6:05 p.m. On Monday, September 3rd the Pelicans close out the season with their final home game of the year at 7:05 p.m.
