Wing Dazzles in Season Debut, Birds Drop Sixth Straight, 3-2

KANNAPOLIS, N.C.. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (18-23) dropped their fourth game of the six-game set against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (22-21) 3-2 at Atrium Health Ballpark on Friday night. With the loss, the Pelicans are now in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season (six games).

Cubs 12th ranked prospect RHP Kaleb Wing dazzled in his Pelicans debut. The 19-year-old tossed four scorless innings of one-hit ball while racking up six strikeouts.

Myrtle Beach jumped out to an early lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, Josiah Hartshorn laced a double and then moved to third on a single from Jose Escobar. Yahil Melendez followed with a two-run double to give the Birds an early 2-0 lead.

Kannapolis put up all three runs of their night in the bottom of the sixth. Adrian Gil and Jaden Fauske drew walks to start the frame. The next batter Billy Carlson smashed an RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1. A batter later, Stiven Flores hit an RBI single to tie the game up at 2-2. Matthew Broughton followed with a go-ahead RBI sacrifice fly to give the Cannon Ballers the 3-2 win.

LHP Trey Cooper (3-0, 3.33) received the win for the Cannon Ballers. LHP Victor Zarraga (2-3, 5.18) was tagged with the loss. RHP Marco Barrios (S,3) received the save for Kannapolis.

Myrtle Beach will continue their six-game roadtrip against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers on Saturday May 23 at Atrium Health Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. RHP Noah Edders (0-2, 4.12) will start on the hill for Myrtle Beach. RHP Caedmon Parker (1-2, 2.86) gets the nod for the Kannapolis.
