Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Frederick starter Tim Bascom made his Carolina League debut against the Pelicans on Thursday evening and his teammates made sure that he'd leave BB&T Coastal Field with something to celebrate. The Keys offense collected 15 hits and jumped out to a sizable early lead before holding on late to defeat the Birds 7-4, helping the 22-year-old earn his first win. Myrtle Beach fell to 29-37 in the second half and 59-76 overall, while Frederick improved to 29-35 in the second stanza and 61-72 on the year.
In the top of the first inning, Pelicans starter Deunte Heath, who was working on just three days rest, issued a lead-off walk to Blake Davis and Jonathan Tucker singled into right-center to put runners at the corners with no outs. Zach Dillon followed with an RBI single into right field, plating Davis, to give the Keys a 1-0 edge.
The Keys pushed across three runs in the top of the third highlighted by three consecutive one out singles from Davis, Tucker, and Chris Amador. Amador's single drove home Davis to put the Keys up by a pair, which quickly turned into a 4-0 advantage when All-Star third baseman Ryan Finan ripped a two-run double against the base of the wall in right-center.
After the Keys padded their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI single from Finan, the Pelicans finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back base hits from Brandon Monk and Jordan Schafer, followed by an RBI single to right field off the bat of Michael Fisher, forced Keys Manager Tommy Thompson to dip into the bullpen. Thompson summoned reliever Blake Owen to the mound and the right-hander responded by retiring the first two Pelicans he faced, but with two down Larry Williams came through with a sharp line drive single into left field to score Schafer and pull the Birds within three, 5-2.
Frederick increased their lead in the top of the seventh when Finan delivered his fourth RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly to deep center, which pushed across Dillon, who legged out a one-out triple earlier in the frame. In the eighth, the Keys stretched the lead to 7-2 thanks to an RBI double smacked by Davis. The Pelicans rallied with a run in the bottom of the eighth and made it 7-3, on the strength of a pinch-hit RBI single to left by J.D. Roberts, who entered the game for Roberto Alvarez. Roberts' drove in Schafer, who had reached via a lead-off single to give the All-Star outfielder his 168th hit of the season, which ranks 2nd in all of Minor League Baseball.
In the ninth, the Pelicans climbed to within three when Jerry Verastegui attempted to advance to third on a passed ball. The throw to third from Dillon sailed down the left field line allowing a diving Verastegui to pop up and trot across the plate, making it a 7-4 ballgame, which is how it would end.
Heath (L, 2-4) yielded five runs on eight hits, walked four, and struck out five in four innings of work. Brett Butts tossed 3.2 frames and gave up a couple of runs on six hits in his Carolina League debut. Ryne Reynoso, also made his debut and slung 1.1 innings of scoreless relief that saw the former Boston College arm allow just one hit. Bascom (W, 1-0) held the Pelicans to two hits in five strong innings. He fanned four and walked nobody to earn the favorable decision. Owen (S, 2) picked up the save by virtue of tossing four effective innings, during which he allowed a couple of runs on six hits.
The Pelicans were led at the plate by Monk's 3-4 night, his second three hit effort in a week. Schafer went 2-for-5, while Derrick Arnold picked up a couple of hits and finished 2-for-4.
The series finale of this four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday, with Tommy Hanson (3-3, 4.53 ERA) taking the hill for Myrtle Beach and RHP Brad Bergesen (2-6, 6.20 ERA) for Frederick.
