Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Myrtle Beach Pelicans' slugging first baseman Isaiah Ka'aihue and do-it-all center fielder Jordan Schafer were named to the year-end All-Star team, the Carolina League announced today.

Ka'aihue is the all-time home run leader in Pelicans franchise history, socking 35 round trippers in 142 career games as a member of the Birds. He was hitting .298 with 22 home runs and 61 RBI when he was promoted to Class AA Mississippi on July 24th, and still leads the league with a .410 on-base percentage and a .583 slugging percentage. The numbers reflect how much he meant to Myrtle Beach, as the Birds have gone 11-24 since his departure (a .314 winning percentage). The "Hawaiian Hammer" as he's affectionately known, was signed by Atlanta as a non-drafted free agent in 2005.

"I'm very happy and extremely proud of both K.K. and Jordan for receiving this honor," Pelicans Manager Rocket Wheeler said. "Isaiah was having an MVP-type season when he was promoted, and for him to miss the final six weeks of the season and still make the All-Star team speaks volumes about the impact he had on the league while he was here. Jordan has been a spark-plug for us ever since coming up from Rome, and beyond what he's done at the plate I also think he's the finest defensive outfielder in the whole league. I think he made the All-Star team for what he does defensively just as much as what he provides offensively."

Schafer joined the Braves system as a third-round pick out of Winter Haven (FL) High School in the 2005. He began this season in Rome where he hit .372 in 30 games before earning a promotion to Myrtle Beach on May 7th. Since then he has been a constant in the lineup, hitting .286 with 10 home runs, 42 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 101 games in addition to making numerous highlight-reel plays in center field. Combined with his stats from Rome, Schafer is fifth in all of minor league baseball with 166 hits, third with 49 doubles, fifth with 74 extra-base hits, and seventh with 280 total bases.

The Pelicans are home tonight and host the Frederick Keys in game three of a four-game series at 7:05 p.m. It's Locals Night at the ballpark as fans with a local ID will get $2 off their ticket, and it's also the final Thirsty Thursday of the year with $1 Bud and Bud Light drafts flowing from 5:30-7:30 p.m. presented by Budweiser, Club Boca, the Weekly Surge and Hot 100 FM. The game broadcast begins at 7 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.

This final home stand is highlighted by NASCAR night on Saturday, September 1st at 7:05 p.m. and the final post-game fireworks show of the season on Sunday, September 2nd as part of Fan Appreciation Night at 6:05 p.m. On Monday, September 3rd the Pelicans close out the season with their final home game of the year at 7:05 p.m.
