WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Kinston used a solid start from Josh Tomlin and the offensive production of Wes Hodges to shutout Winston-Salem 5-0 on Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field. Tomlin (1-1) earned his first Carolina League win by limiting Winston-Salem to three hits, while striking out six in 6 2/3 innings of work. Wes Hodges provided the offense for the Indians going 3-for-5 with a homerun and 3 RBI.

Kinston took an early lead in the first inning when they loaded the bases with one out against Warthogs starting pitcher Clayton Richard. Hodges lined an RBI single to right field that plated Josh Rodriguez and Jared Goedert followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Matt Whitney to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. Kinston added to their advantage with a solo homerun by Hodges in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Another solo homerun, this time off the bat of Johnny Drennen in the sixth inning gave Kinston a 4-0 lead. Hodges struck again in the seventh inning with a two-out RBI double to extend the Indians advantage to 5-0. Chris Niesel and Matt Meyer combined to work the final 2 ½ innings in relief of Tomlin and keep Winston-Salem off the board.

Richard only lasted 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs in taking the loss. He also walked four and struck out five as his record falls to 8-12 with the defeat. The Warthogs were only able to muster four hits and they all came off the bat off Javier Castillo, who finished 4-for-4 with a double and three singles.
