
Martens to begin season in Grand Rapids

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder has announced defenseman Nick Martens will begin the 2005-06 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL), making the team via tryout on a two-way contract.
Martens, who signed with the Thunder on September 20th, appeared in all three pre-season Griffins contests, all wins. His lone point recorded (1g-0a = 1p) was a power-play goal, while also notching two penalty minutes and seven shots.
Martens spent the previous four seasons at college hockey power Michigan (NCAA). In 129 career games with the Wolverines (7g-24a =31p), the native of Ann Arbor, Mich. helped in guiding Michigan to two NCAA Frozen Four appearances, while piling on a career plus/minus rating of +38, leading the team with a +22 rating as a sophomore in 2002-03.
Martens also achieved college scoring highs in 2002-03 (3g-9a = 12p), in 43 games.
The Thunder opens training camp this Saturday, October 8th at Stockton's Oak Park Rink at 9am. The Thunder will take on the Fresno Falcons in the season opener on October 22nd in Fresno, and host the Falcons in the inaugural home opener on December 3rd.
