Marlies Hold off Rivermen 4-3

Faced with two different two-goal deficits, the Peoria Rivermen rallied back but fell short as the Toronto Marlies held on for a 4-3 win on Sunday evening at Ricoh Coliseum. Peoria has now lost back-to-back road games for the first time this year and are 3-2-0-0 on their current nine-game trip.
TJ Hensick picked up his league-leading 25th point and 19th assist on Phil McRae's power-play goal in the second period. The Rivermen fell to 9-8-1-1 (20 points) and into third place in the Midwest Division.
Toronto's Marcel Mueller opened the scoring at 3:32 of the first period with goal that bounced in off his skate blade with his team on the power play.
Jonathan Cheechoo evened the score at the 14:57 mark of the first period. He took a slap shot that found its way into the net under the blocker of Jussi Rynnas. It was his fifth goal of the year and was assisted by Danny Syvret and Mark Cundari.
The Marlies opened the second period with two goals in the first two minutes to take a two goal lead. Jerry D'Amigo and Greg Scott each earned their fourth goal of the year as they scored at 0:37 and 1:54 respectively.
Phil McRae scored his ninth goal of the year on a 5-on-3 advantage at the 4:34 mark of the second period to cut the Toronto lead in half. McRae received a pass at the top of the right circle from Syvret and one-timed a shot over the glove of Rynnas.
Toronto's Josh Engel picked up the eventual game-winner with his first goal of the year at the 14:19 mark of the second. Engel dragged the puck around a Rivermen defender and finished it with a shot over the blocker of Jake Allen. Ryan Hamilton and Nazem Kadri picked up the assists on the play.
Tyler Shattock recorded his second goal of the year 6:46 into the third on a rebound loose in the crease to cut the Toronto lead to one, but the Marlies held on for the 4-3 victory.
The Rivermen went 1-for-5 on the man advantage in the game and were outshot 35-30.
The Rivermen continue their road trip Friday in Rockford for an Illinois Lottery Cup contest against the IceHogs at 7:05 p.m. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
