11/15, (ADK 2, POR 4) - Pirates' Comeback Stuns Phantoms

(Box Score)

The Phantoms jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring a pair of 5-on-3 goals in the opening 10 minutes to chase Portland's starting goalie from the game. However, the Pirates came back to score four unanswered goals to get a 4-2 win in Portland.

The win was the first for the Pirates in the season series. Michael Leighton's 35th career shutout led Adirondack to a 3-0 win at Portland on October 21.

The Phantoms' two goals were scored by Ben Holmstrom and Jason Akeson. Holmstrom (1g, 1a), Akeson (1g, 1a) and Garrett Roe (0g, 2a) all compiled two-point games.

Both of Adirondack's goals were scored against Curtis McElhinney, who was pulled from the game after allowing the two goals on seven shots. Marc Cheverie stopped all 17 shots he faced in relief of McElhinney and got the win.

Michael Leighton made 26 saves on 30 shots and was the losing goalie.

Portland's goals were scored by Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Tyler Eckford, Andy Miele and Jordan Szwarz.

11/19, (ADK 5, SYR 2) - Offensive Explosion In Syracuse

http://theahl.com/stats/official-game-report.php'game_id1008885

(Box Score)

The Phantoms exploded for their largest offensive output in three weeks and got their first win of the season over the Syracuse Crunch, on Saturday night.

The Crunch had won the first two head-to-head games this season, after Adirondack dominated the season series last year with seven wins in eight games.

Adirondack's well-rounded offensive attack featured a season-high 42 shots-on-goal, with five different players tallying markers: Jon Kalinski, Eric Wellwood, Ben Holmstrom, Jason Akeson and Blake Kessel. Defensemen Dan Jancevski and Oskars Bartulis also played key roles, chipping in with a pair of assists apiece.

The Phantoms' five goals came in support of Jason Bacashihua, who made 25 saves on 27 shots to improve to 3-0-1 in his last four starts.

Jeff Deslauriers was the losing goalie after allowing five goals on 42 shots.

Kyle Palmieri and Patrick Maroon were the Crunch's goal scorers.

11/20, (ADK 3, BRI 5) - Sound Tigers Late Comeback Edges Phantoms

http://theahl.com/stats/official-game-report.php'game_id1008888

(Box Score)

Jason Akeson scored a pair of goals to stake the Phantoms to a one-goal, third-period lead. However, the Sound Tigers came back and scored four third-period markers and won 5-3.

Defenseman Olivier Lauridsen also scored for the Phantoms, netting his first professional goal with the team trailing late in the third period. Mike Testwuide also had his biggest offensive game of the season, assisting on all three of Adirondack's goals.

The Sound Tigers' goal scorers were Jeremy Colliton, Scott Howes, Dylan Reese, Micheal Haley and Tim Wallace.

Bridgeport's Kevin Poulin made 19 saves on 22 shots to get the win.

Michael Leighton made 21 saves on 25 shots, with Tim Wallace's game-sealing tally coming into an empty net in the game's final minute.

Phantoms Breakdown

--Head Coach Joe Paterson has 97 career AHL victories as he approaches the 100 victory milestone. He now has 35 wins since assuming the reigns with Adirondack on Dec 20, 2010. He was also head coach of the Louisville Panthers in the AHL from 1999-2001.

--Jason Akeson registered points in all three games last week and carries a team-best five-game point-scoring streak (3g, 3a) into the coming week. Akeson, who led the Ontario Hockey League with 108 points as a member of the Kitchener Rangers last season, is now second on the Phantoms with 14 points (5g, 9a), just one back of Denis Hamel for the team's scoring lead.

-Mike Testwuide is playing his best offensive hockey of the season, coming off Sunday's game where he set a career-high with three assists in one contest. Testwuide, a native of Vail, Colorado who was a rookie with the Phantoms last season, has one goal and seven assists in 2011-12. He lead the team's rookies with 18 goals last season.

-The past week was also a one of memorable milestones for a pair of Phantoms defensemen. Olivier Lauridsen, a native of Denmark who played collegiate hockey at St. Cloud State in Minnesota, scored his first professional goal on Sunday in Bridgeport. Blake Kessel, a rookie out of the University of New Hampshire, scored his first professional goal in Saturday's 5-2 thumping of the Syracuse Crunch. Blake Kessel's older brother, Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs, leads the NHL with 16 goals after scoring twice against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

-Dan Jancevski, the team's most veteran defenseman, had a milestone of his own. Jancevski's two assists in Syracuse were the 200th and 201st in his 784-game AHL career.

--Adirondack's power play has been great all year with strikes in 12-of-16 games. Miraculously, the team is a perfect 4-0-0 in the games when it does not score on the power play, with three of the game-winning goals in those games coming shorthanded. Harry Zolnierczyk scored the shorthanded winner at Rochester on October 23, Jon Kalinski turned the trick on November 4 at Springfield and Eric Wellwood provided the shorthanded-winner this past Saturday in Syracuse.

Denis Hamel's Chase of Glenn Merkosky

Denis Hamel's most recent goal was his 324th career strike in the AHL. Hamel enters the Holiday Week just one back of the former Adirondack Red Wing great, Glenn Merkosky, for 12th place on the AHL's all-time goal-scoring list.

Hamel, a 15th-year professional, is just 16 games from 1,000 professional games and is 35th in all-time AHL points with 623. Hamel's next to targets on the all-time points list are Brian Kilrea and Ken Gernander, who both retired with 624 points. Kilrea and Gernander both went on to notable coaching careers after their playing days. Kilrea coached the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League from 1974-2009 and was enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003, while Gernander is currently the bench boss for the Connecticut Whale.

Upcoming Opponents

Binghamton Senators (Ottawa Senators) - The Phantoms start the week and finish their four-game road trip at Binghamton on Thanksgiving evening at 6:00 p.m. This is the first of eight meetings with the Senators this season.

Last season, Binghamton rallied from a 3-1 hole in the first round of the playoffs against Manchester and won the city's first Calder Cup following stunning defeats of the Portland Pirates, Charlotte Checkers and Houston Aeros, in which the Senators were without home-ice advantage in each series. The Senators are 6-10-2 and in last place in the East Division this season.

The backbone of this Senators team is its goaltender, Rob Lehner. Last season, at age 19, Lehner overtook Barry Brust as the team's starting goalie during the playoffs and was the MVP of the Calder Cup Playoffs. Although just 4-6-1 this year, Lehner has a solid .916 save percentage and is widely viewed as the future starting goalie of the Ottawa Senators.

Corey Locke was the AHL's regular-season MVP with 86 points last year. Locke, a 27 year old who also won a Calder Cup with the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2006-07, is tied for the Binghamton lead with seven assists this year.

Small, but speedy center Mike Hoffman is the man Locke is tied with for the Senators' lead in assists. Hoffman is tied for the team lead in points (11) with Mark Parrish.

Parrish, a former U.S. Olympian who had a career-best 30 goals with the New York Islanders 10 years ago, has 11 points and has long been regarded as one of the best shot-deflectors in pro hockey.

Springfield Falcons (Columbus Blue Jackets) - The Adirondack Phantoms return home on Friday for a matchup with the Springfield Falcons, a team which they've never lost to (5-0). The Phantoms are 1-0-0 against Springfield this season, winning 2-1 on November 4 in Massachusetts. The Falcons are 4-1-0 since losing to the Phantoms.

A reason for Springfield's turnaround has been the return of Alexandre Giroux, who has been injured or playing with the Blue Jackets most of this season. Giroux, an 11th-year pro who has won two Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears, has five goals in the last four games. Giroux has 356 career goals, which are 10th most in AHL history.

Another reason for the Falcons' recent improvements has been goalie Manny Legace. Legace, a 38 year old who won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2002, has won three straight starts, allowing a total of six goals over his last four starts.

A player to watch on the Falcons is Cam Atkinson. Atkinson has three goals in the last two games and scored Springfield's only goal on November 4 against Adirondack. Atkinson, a native of Greenwich, Connecticut, was a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award at Boston College and won a National Title in 2009-10

Albany Devils (New Jersey Devils) - The Phantoms finish their week with a clash against their hated rival, the Albany Devils. After finishing last season with a league-worst 70 points and trudging through the early part of this season with just one win in their first six games; the Devils have reversed their fortunes.

The Devils have won eight of their last 11 games and are back in the thick of the Northeast Division's very-tight race. A main reason for the Devils' turnaround has been great defensive play, which has been a trademark of the New Jersey Devils organization and its affiliates for the last two decades. Although they've given up nine goals in the last two games, Albany was coming off a stretch where it allowed just 16 goals over nine games.

The goalie behind Albany's defensive success is Keith Kincaid. A rookie out of Union College, Kincaid has won four of his last five starts and has a great .915 save percentage for the season. The Devils' other goalie is Jeff Frazee, who beat the Phantoms on October 22 and sports a 3-4-2 record.

Albany's hottest offensive players are Nathan Perkovich and Steve Bernier. All three of Perkovich's three goals this season have come in the last three games. Meanwhile, Bernier, a former first-round draft choice of San Jose in 2003, has goals in each of the last two games.

5-foot-6, 165-pound Joe Whitney leads Albany with 10 points (5g, 5a) overall.
