Marincov's Blast Lifts Ports to Series Sweep

Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Tyler Marincov continues to be the main source of power for the Stockton Ports, and on Sunday afternoon it was Marincov's power that helped the Ports to a come-from-behind victory. With one on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, Marincov hit a two-run homer to give the Ports a 3-2 lead and ultimately the win at Banner Island Ballpark as Stockton locked up its first series sweep of the season.

Both starting pitchers were locked in early as neither team had a hit until the bottom of the fourth, when Marincov reached on a two-out infield single. Ports starter Heath Fillmyer pitched around the first hit he allowed, a single to lead off the fifth. Stockton finally broke the ice in the bottom of the fifth as Mikey White reached on a one-out double, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an ensuing single by Jose Brizuela to give the Ports a 1-0 lead.

The fifth inning run was the only tally allowed by Nuts starter Sam Howard, who received a no-decision after going 6.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out three.

Fillmyer made a mental mistake that cost him a run in the top of the sixth. With Emerson Jimenez at third with two outs, Fillmyer balked as he was working in a two-strike count to Max White, allowing Jimenez to come home and tie the game at 1-1.

The run allowed on the balk was the only run allowed by Fillmyer in an otherwise sterling performance. The right-hander received a no-decision, going six innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out six.

Matt Stalcup (1-0) took over for Fillmyer in the seventh and set the side down in order in his first inning of work. In the eighth, however, Troy Stein led off with a single and scored on a two-out double by Wes Rogers to give the Nuts their first lead at 2-1.

Stockton came back in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead on the Marincov two-run homer, which came two batters after a leadoff single by B.J. Boyd. The blast was surrendered by Nuts reliever Helmis Rodriguez (1-2), who suffered the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in an inning-and-two-thirds of relief.

Lou Trivino (SV, 1) entered to pitch the ninth and set the side down in order to notch his first save of the season, also making a winner of Stalcup who allowed one run in two innings of relief.

After their first series sweep of the season, the Ports welcome the San Jose Giants to Banner Island Ballpark on Monday to begin a four-game set. In the series opener, Casey Meisner (0-2, 3.48 ERA) gets the ball for Stockton, opposed by San Jose southpaw Mark Reyes (1-0, 6.75 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
