San Jose Giants News Release

VISALIA, CA - Four Visalia pitchers combined to silence the San Jose bats on Saturday night as the Rawhide earned a 3-1 victory over the Giants at Recreation Park. Visalia took the lead with a two-run bottom of the fifth inning before adding an insurance tally in the eighth en route to their second straight win in the series against San Jose (10-10).

C.J Hinojosa's (1-for-3, HR, RBI) fourth-inning solo home run accounted for the only Giants run in the contest. Johneshwy Fargas (2-for-3) and Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (2-for-4, 2B) added two hits apiece in defeat.

The game was scoreless until Hinojosa led off the top of the fourth with a towering home run down the left field line. The homer was Hinojosa's second of the season. San Jose though had an opportunity to add to their lead later in the frame as Chris Shaw and Aramis Garcia produced back-to-back singles before a one-out single from Vizcaino, Jr. loaded the bases. Jonah Arenado was up next, but his hard line drive was caught at second base by Henry Castillo, who then doubled off Garcia at second to end the inning.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher D.J. Snelten kept the Rawhide off the scoreboard over the first four innings yielding just two singles. Snelten retired 11 out of the first 14 Visalia batters before running into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Cody Regis led off the pivotal fifth-inning rally with an infield single to second. Dawel Lugo then lined a single to right to put runners on first and second. Tyler Baker followed with a sacrifice bunt, but reached safely when the third baseman Vizcaino's throw pulled Richard Rodriguez off the bag at first. Vizcaino, Jr. was charged with an error on the play as Visalia loaded the bases with none out. Victor Reyes then grounded a single through the hole on the left side to plate Regis with the tying run. After Snelten struck out Ericson Leonora on three pitches, Colin Bray stepped to the plate and grounded an 0-2 pitch into left for another RBI single to make it 2-1 Rawhide. The bases were still loaded following the go-ahead hit, but Snelten recovered to limit the damage as Domingo Leyba lined out to shortstop and Rudy Flores flied out to center to finish the inning.

The Giants put the potential tying run in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to draw even. In the top of the sixth, Vizcaino, Jr. doubled with two outs to knock Visalia starter Lucas Irvine out of the game. Bud Jeter entered from the bullpen and promptly threw a wild pitch advancing Vizcaino to third, but then struck out Arenado to retire the side.

In the top of the seventh, Fargas walked with one out, moved to second on a two-out wild pitch, but was stranded there when Hinojosa popped out to shortstop.

After San Jose was retired 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, the Rawhide extended their lead in the bottom of the inning when Flores crushed a solo home run to deep right off of Reyes Moronta.

Visalia closer Jimmie Sherfy then worked a perfect top of the ninth to seal the Rawhide victory.

Irvine (1-0) earned his first victory of the year after scattering eight hits with just one run allowed in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Sherfy picked-up his second save of the series and seventh of the season.

Snelten (1-2) took the loss for the Giants. The left-hander was charged with two runs (both earned) on seven hits over a season-high six innings. Snelten walked one and struck out five during his 90-pitch outing.
